    Road Racing at Pueblo

Race video from last Sunday with NASA Rocky Mountain... http://videos.streetfire.net/video/P...-at_683023.htm

Qualifying got screwed up, so I had to start at the very back and work my way through the field. Sucked for me, but it made for a good video at least.

We had a standing start, so I got to show off my "mad tite JDM" drag racing skills, although I immediately lost any advantage that I had when I had to swerve around the car directly in front of me.

You need to be more aggressive in the turns. There was like 10 times you should have overcome that black car , but you gave him too much space in the turns. Some of his turns were way early too, and wide on the exit.

Nice vid though, I like the force guage

    her turn ins were early*
black car is Michelle, and she loves to drive that defensive line. best way to overcome a defensive line (someone who comes in early to defend the inside) is to hang back a little and get them with greater exit speed, or fake them by going to the inside and diving to the outside at the last second. Though she has a fresh engine which makes it tough.

how much are you allowed to mod the motor?

That's true to an extent, and some of my problem was that I was getting too close and having to get on my brakes too much. I started trying to hang back to get a good run on the black car, but didn't quite get the timing to work out right... I got real close at the end of the last lap, but obviously didn't pull it off in time. But it's a learning experience and I see an opportunity to try a different approach next time.

Also, road racing passing rules require that I get my front wheel at least up to the other car's door and keep it there, otherwise the other car can (and is encouraged to) dive down and take my nose off. I've found from past experience that I can get right up in person's mirrors, or stick my nose inside of them in a turn, and get some other drivers to just give up the line, even though I may not actually have the right of way according to the passing rules. However, the driver of this particular black car stopped falling for that last year and will come over and cause me to slam on the brakes if I try to bluff like that. I also had to deal with keeping that other red car behind me, so it was important to not give him an opening.

intake before the afm is free, data doesnt support that any aftermarket intake yields any power though. Head can be shaved to a small extent and exhaust after header is free. Otherwise, everything is stock.

so higher compression pistons is a no go? aftermarket valve train?

sorta, any OEM 83 - 88 NA 2.5 944 parts are allowed so updating and backdating is permitted. For example, I rebuilt my engine this offseason with the 88 pistons that have slightly higher compression and an 83 crank which is crossdrilled. Even so, I dont seem to have any more power than anyone else.

Streetfire hates me and wont upload my video from the weekend.

The '83-'87 has 9.5:1 compression pistons, where the '88 had 10.2:1. The class rules allow swapping parts between '83-'88 cars, as well as head shaving, with a maximum of 10.5:1 compression. The '88 pistons are ideal, but are hard to find separate from buying a whole '88 engine.

I'm running an '84 motor with a little scoring in cylinders 2 and 3, and a freshly rebuilt head (factory specs) that has been shaved a bit. I don't know my exact compression ratio, but it's low 10's at the most. My data acquisition system (Traqmate) shows that my engine output is pretty close to Chris' (he has a fresh '88 block, but didn't rebuild the head), and possibly 1-2 HP lower than another guy with an '88 motor (although my air filter was clogged for the session that we compared). I strongly suspect that my engine computer runs more timing advance than the 88's, and that combined with my head shaving is how I'm making up the difference of having lower compression pistons.

There are a few cars with fully rebuilt '88 motors that seem to be making a little more power, but only one of them has shown to be a significant difference (fresh '88 motor with an early computer and some other tricks), and I was still able to keep him behind me during an earlier race.

Well done none the less. You seemed to overtake everyone else pretty quickly up until the black car.

Are you able to change final drives or regear? is there many option for that between the years you posted? What about rpm range, where are you guys making the most power at?

Gearing has to remain stock. The later cars got a shorter 5th gear that we can use (I've already put one in my car), but only a handful of tracks use 5th gear enough for that to be an advantage. It's not an issue at Pueblo, but is worth having at Miller Motorsports Park (Salt Lake City) and Gateway (St Louis). It would probably matter at PPIR too, if we ran the oval instead of using the infield road course.

Our rev-limiter is at 6500 RPM, and the power band is fairly broad, but you definitely want to keep the RPM's up and shift as late as possible so that you can stay in a lower gear for longer.

There are some people's modifications that have been outlawed in the next years rule book but at least in the rocky mountain region nobody wants to win illegally. They want to win fair and square.

Oh I am sure that takes the fun out of it for normal racers... I just had a thought of things getting out of hand like they did in drag racing back in the days when people would get specialized heads that had nitrous ports inside of them. Was just curious...

what mods are illegal next year that are legal today?
