If there is un-metered air getting into the intake tract, that will cause the issues you describe as well. I would make sure there are no cracks in the intake tube between the MAF and the throttle body.
so i was able to "rent" a code puller from a friend at napa. maf sensor was bad and the tps had to be recalibrated. got her up and running in no time with a the handy multimeter, a quick craigslist run and a few subie forums. thanks guys. i wasnt aware that all cars from 90~+ have the ability to pull codes.
