I know a lot of you come here to see whats going on when the site is down. I wanted to disbatch an e-mail, but didn't have a chance. The site is down for a few more hours because I purchased a second server to ensure that we have enough bandwidth for both club18t and highaltitudeimports.com each month. I spent the last 6 or so hours copying files, databases, and reconfiguring all of the system files. Now all i'm waiting on is the DNS server to update and the site should be back up and better than ever. Looks like we can turn avatars and images back on :)

Get your own ideas. Wait a minute, never mind. Brian, Brandon pm'ed me and said that he would go ahead and donate for both of us. Thanks Brandon I owe you a beer or something.

Well, I'm wondering if I can get the IP to the new server so I can access the site before the domain servers are updated.

Paul it's not a problem big guy :) We're going to new servers for 18t because we've grown so big! :D 3million hits last month

And for the record Club18t is larger than HAI now ;)

paul, this site went through it's own series of issues that's for sure...lol

First I had it hosted off of my home computer (dual pentium 2 400) for about a year. It crashed a lot ect, but hey it was free. Then we moved to a server much like the one we are on now, but there have been at least 3 or 4 server moves since then :D. I hate server moves at this point. I think i'm going to invent some way for DNS entries to update in real time instead of 24 hours...lol

Someone asked for the ip address to the site. Well the ip is the same as it was before which is part of the problem. Apache web servers allow for virtual doamins and virtual hosting. This means that a lot of accounts can share a single ip, but in order to access the site the dns server has to update.

To those of you donating to support the cause, thank you very much it definetly helps offset the costs. The next move for HAI and club18t is going to be to their very own dedicated server with 400GB of monthly bandwidth and all the processing power we could ever need :)

bondjetta
04-07-2003, 08:45 AM
So brian are you gonna setup that new dedicated server with WHM (web host management) so u can lease off space? If you could give people their own chunk along w/ a CPanel login that'd be awesome :) 'Cause then you could get Indy peeps like me to lease from u and help w/ the costs :) I'm sure it's possible.

and work the DNS thing...lol I can't comprehend why it would take 24hrs for the process to complete. Granted every of the 11 nodes worldwide had to update that shouldn't take an hour tops. The backlog might be part of the issue, but even then those backbones are running processors that make the McLaren F1 look like a Ford Taurus :D

Leiger 4

WOOHOO!!!

so, ahh, when it's going to be ready?

john

Brian - I'm still setup to be your primary DNS server. If you need DNS info changed, stop repointing the DNS info at the viperhost boxes and redirect it to me. I can get new DNS info pushed out in a matter of minutes.

K? K.

Try Zoneedit.com. I use them to update my IP for my domain(digitaltorque.com) when my cable provider's dhcp server decides I need a new one. They update immediately, but if your ISP caches domain names, it could take up to an hour for the domain to update.

Oops... posted this before I saw John's post.

Oh, and how is the virtual domain set up? I'm pretty sure it just uses a different directory... couldn't we use http://IP/directory_for_club18t/ to access it?

I'm a bit fuzzy on virtual domains... haven't set one up on my apache server yet.

I know u're a unix guy :D I just wanna know how to do it ;) Or have u do it for me if the need arises. it took awhile for the DNS to change for noteableimports.com...close to a week! Bunch of problems there, not all DNS related, but anywho :) they're fixed now at least.

john

Virtual domains, at least with apache, are setup in httpd.conf. You define the IP address to listen on, as well as which virt domain to listen for.

For example:

<VirtualHost 216.17.180.70>
ServerName redstar-assoc.com
ServerAlias www.redstar-assoc.com
ServerAdmin john@jsalmi.com
DocumentRoot /web/redstar
ErrorLog logs/redstar/error_log
CustomLog logs/redstar/access_log combined
</VirtualHost>

That says that I'm listening on 216.17.180.70 for any incoming requests for redstar-assoc.com, as well as for www.redstar-assoc.com.

As far as getting there from the outside world, it's possible if the docroot for the virt domain is accessible from, say, a user account - something like
http://jsalmi.com/~username/ where username would be someone on my box with a user account, and their webstuff is in ~username/public_html...

Cheers.

right, so the question is whether club18t's document root is within the web root of the server or within a user's doc root.

and what was the original IP?

When you create your domain record, you specify nameservers. Those are the nameservers that are "authoritative" for resolving the domain into the IP. If you set those nameservers to your own nameserver or one that someone can update quickly for you, then you will see the change quickly. As I said before, this might be immediate, and it might take up to an hour depending on whether your ISP caches domain lookups.

I'm just running bind and have it pointed at the 'boot files' for all the domains which I'm doing DNS for. :)

Probably not.

The IP which I've been pushing out is:

jsalmi.com:/home/john> nslookup club18t.com
Server: localhost.jsalmi.com
Address: 127.0.0.1

Name: club18t.com
Address: 66.11.162.215

So, if the server is set up properly and that's the correct address, I should be able to:

vi /etc/hosts
add:
66.11.162.215 club18t.com www.club18t.com

lynx http://www.club18t.com

right?
or would that not work for the virtual domain setup?

Problem is, it takes my domain registrar 24-48 hours to make dns server changes. What a pain in the neck. After this is switched over i'm going to put you back as primary. I wonder why it switched back in the first place?

bond: the server plan i'm looking at gives me a dedicated server and the ability to give other users their own cpanel, but it uses plesk instead of cpanel which actually looks pretty nice. That is one option, the second is to get a dedicated server that offers cpanel. I found one by doing a tracert of viperhost.com. It gave me the address of the datacenter viperhost uses, so actually if I go that route I would have a server next to viperhosts servers ;)

Probably not, as the IP can be pretty "generic". I have 8 websites running on my 216.17.180.70 address, with apache taking care of getting to the right content.

awwww...that kinda sucks cause i'm broke rofl:

And Brian...keep me up to speed on the dedicated servers...as long as I can get my own version of CPanel (or something close) then I'm happy....you also have to be willing to lease space out for other people who I contract out server space for (ie NoteableImports.com) that way we can help cover costs on another level :) I think this could be for the best in the end...let me know.
