i don't want to kill my self so it looks like a 600 or close around there is a good starter bike. what should i look out for when buying a bike? i know to look for it being droped and such. is miles a big concern on them? it seems like my price range i am looking at around 15000 miles on any given bike. how does getting a bike licens work? any insight would be great. thanks

I'm assuming you want a sport bike?
A 600 is a good choice, nothing like a damn squid nearly killing himself on a 1,000cc racebike on his first ride.
good place to start- MSF (http://www.msf-usa.org/)
I took the MOST rider class put out by ABATE. It is probably the best thing for a new rider and you get your licence out of the deal. It does cost around $250 but is worth it.
look for signs that the bike has been maintained and cared for. Smooth control operation and no bent pegs or stuff like that. Rev the bike in nuetral and look for smoke blowing out the pipe when you let off- this is bad. You can tell if the bike is pushed hard and leaned a lot by the outside edges of the tires being worn and torn up- not jsut the center.
Good luck, let us know.

I've been entertaining the idea of selling my R6. Red '01 never dropped. No mods, I think it has around 5700 miles. $6000 obo.

How's 4 grand for a 97 GSXR 600? I have records of EVERY oil change. Every 1,500 miles, the engine does turn 13,000 after all!

Well, for a starter bike, nothing beats the SV650. The V-twin provides good power for the starter rider. If you already have some riding experience, a GSXR600 would be your best bet.

A) Already answered ;)
B) Check the fairings, that's the easiest way to find out if it's been dropped...if not that, then check the frame, handle bars, mirrors, anything that sticks out. And there's one more thing...if a bike is layed down, dropped, or anything like that, chances are (if the owner called the insurance company) it was totaled. So, if it was totalled, there would be records of it, most of which on the title...salvage, rebuild, etc.
C)15000 miles is a lot. Watch yourself with that one...make sure the owner has records of tune-ups, oil changes, lubeing/adjusting of the chains, and most of all, make sure that the owner has had his valves readjusted at 16k (if s/he hasn't already done so below that time or if the odometer reads above that).
