I think it was to heat the ground up to make the tires stick for better launches.

They even prepped the road for the Firebird to accomodate it's slicks and then still made excuses about traction when the Eclipse won and they also didn't pay up on the $1000 bet. They also made excuses about the Eclipse being a race car vs their full interiored car. Hey,you run what you brung,if you think you'll lose then don't make dumb bets.
