well for now at least.
I built my first computer. Heres a list of parts almost everything was off of pricewatch.
ECS elitegroup K7S5A motherboard
AMD athlon xp 2100 (1.6 or 1.7)
256 ddr2100
60 gig hd western digital
geforce4 video card w/tv and s video out
Ben Q 52x24x52 CD-RW
400watt case.
It will do for right now I spent a little bit under $450 for everything but I still want to get some more ram and a soundcard with RCA outputs.
Thanks brian for helping me with the jumpers since I didn't know which ones need to be where.

thats nice. SHoulda gone with a P4 though... A P4 1.8A can take you to 2.4 easily.. im at 2.8ghz oc'd with stock intel cooler :)
I used to be on AMD.. but they are seriously lagging... and i have less problems with Intel chips than AMD.

I have had the opposite, more problems with the Pentiums then the Athlons and Palominos... Seems the AMD's take overclocking better, just in my experience.
Sounds like a nice machine...

AMD owns intel. They may be lagging a bit for the moment, but from a price performance standpoint they are ahead of the game. I wouldn't trade my athlon xp for anything.

THeres no chip better than the 1.6A and 1.8A p4... It is the best value for the buck. 1.6 goes to 2.5easily... now thats VALUE!

Actually i made a mistake.. i didnt have problems with the amd chip.. it was the Chipset... VIA chipsets suck major. Unless they are the revised versions.
I for one have had the best experience with SiS chipsets. THen intel. I never liked AMD's chipsets... the sucked.

That's pretty similar to my setup. BTW, I'm pretty sure the Athlon2100XP is at 1.73Ghz.
I've got a Gigabyte Mobo tho with onboard USB 2.0 and Firewire (IEEE 1394) and serial ATA/raid and paralell ATA/raid.
Athlon2100 XP
6XX MB of DDR2100
40 Gig Western Digital 7200 RPM
80 Gig Maxtor 7200 RPM
SBLive 5.1 Platinum with LiveDrive
Abit Siluro 64 MB Geforce 2 MX 400 (soon to be ATI AIW 9700)
Plextor 48x24x48 CD-R/RW
400 Watt PC Power and Cooling in full tower case
That's just the best of my babies, I've got 2 more home builts plus a Thinkpad laptop, and my fiancee has her computer too.

Ohh yeah i also have a laptop with the same 1.8A chip in my pc.. its overclocked to 2.3ghz... I had to take out the Heatpipe cooling system and lap it. then i had to use some artic silver. Plus i increaed the airflow and put in a higher RPM fan... its not loud thank god. And gets decent temps. And much faster :)
But if your not too carefull, you can sorta burn your self. ITs only if you leave it on the bed for liek 2 hours whiles its compressing something... it can get pretty nasty. but if you put it on your lap or a hard surface.. it never gets hot
