nvidia's engine room...

and have the most bad ass counter-strike server in existance!

http://www.nvidia.com/content/areyouready/videos/downloads/engineroom_download.wmv

•19 Sun Serengeti 6800 servers, each with 196 GB of RAM
• A Linux farm with 2,000 Pentium 4 2GHz processors
• Another Linux farm with 800 2.4GHz Pentium 4 CPUs, each with 4 GB RAM
• Four Sunfire servers with almost 200 GB RAM each
• A series of racks which will soon hold 12,000 processors running Linux
• Over 90 terabytes of storage capacity

man that's insane... all that just to make a card you can buy for $200

Well I made it almost halfway through and fell asleep. zzzzzzzzzzzz

It was cool to see the servers but after that it was all computer nerd talk. ;)

just for comparison Pixar (the guys who make all those animated movies) just updated their rendering farm... only 1024 pentium cpus (either 2.4s or 2.8s). Nothing that can come close to touching nvidias.

Those Serengetis are about $1.9 million a piece. The Sunfires are about #3 million.

Got kinda boring halfway like V8SpankR said, just alot of stuff in one spot.

Yikes, what the hell do they need all of that computing power for? I can't even imagine what computations they would be doing that would require even a fraction of the power they have in that room.

from what i understand most of it is for testing the new gpu's they are developing. They do stuff like testing timing and all that. It takes that much cpu power to simulate the chips they make for development.

don't they do some kind of game or software developement, too?

Must be the office we were talking about the other day eh? Maybe sometime this week I'll get that video downloaded..hehe. To the people that think we are geeks just for wanting to see this stuff..private companies are getting to have more computer muscle than the government. Good stuff right there... :)

Anyway...the new card from Nvidia is going to be a $300 card...(since the $350 ULTRA apparently got canned) but at least it gives people some point of reference. I'd rather have all those computer too...hell you could sell 1/100th of that rackspace and have MORE than enuf cash to buy all the badass cars you could ever want. It would be interesting to see how intels or AMD's hardware lines up against Nvidia...hehe

Geek power forever!!!!

Not that I've ever heard of. They work pretty closely with many of the MAJOR players in the software world. John Carmack makes it sound like he talks with them daily or something...(hell he prolly does) and I know they work back with id (the software company).

But I think if they were doing anything like a game or other software...(other than drivers of course) they would really play that up too. I'm sure their people are busy enuf trying to maintain that 6 month product cycle.
