I raced a Convertable C5 Corvette in Longmont Saturday night. Luckily my clutch was pretty cool at the time and actually grabbed! We each had a passenger too just for the record. Once from a light, he missed a gear apparently but I had him by a car at that point anyway...Then he wanted to go from roll right after that, I pulled 2-3 cars by the end of second:) I'm assuming he wasn't a great driver 'cause I worked him bad:)
I've asked before, but what times do C5's run at Bandimere in stock trim?

I beat the shit out of one going around a corner at Flatirons a while back in my Si. I definately wouldnt have wanted to run him in a straight line...but there are sharp corners out there too. :)

True, but I'm saying overall investment. I spent $24,000 on the car, $3000 on a custom turbo kit, did all the labor myself, that's $27,000 total:)

Nice kill. He probably was a decent driver. A c5 runs mid 14's up at bandimere driver well. You should own them :D

It's about the class that a corvette has. Sorry to say but I don't know of many 1.8L stock engines in a stock car that can beat a vette, except for maybe a Lotus Elise, and that may still be a tall order. It's not to say it can't be done, and yes you did spend less to go faster, but the Vette just has a sexyness that not many other cars can touch IMHO. Yes your car is fast and looks good doing it, but personally I'd rather have the vette, even if I am slower :)

His stock ITR motor in my stock 92 CX will beat a stock C5 vette in the 1/4. I would give a C5 a good run, probably even win. My friend has a 93 DX with a stock JDM 96 ITR motor with I/H/E and ran a 13.98 @99mph at PMI. But your right, C5's are damn sexy cars!:D

Granted, but your 92 CX didn't come stock with a B18C5, that was my point about stock engines/stock cars.

Don't mean to start a war, but if it came down to it and I had to choose between the R and the Vette. The Vette would hands down be my choice. Definitly a lot sexier than an R , faster stock, and they handle pretty damn good with a person who knows how to handle one. nwo if we are talking a Z06 then that is a comparison that should never be made.

I'd rather have the vette see the R's taillights anyday.
My uncle owns a vette (c5) and they are sexy cars but not my style. He has more panty dropping status but if he thinks the car is sick and can beat anything on the road then he's wrong. Too much $$ for me (car and insurance wise) I'd rather have a bimmer, s2k, rx-7, i guess im just an closed minded import head  oh well.
Congrats on the kill Mark, just keep that motor in one piece!

I think you are a little close minded when it comes to domestics:) I am not taking anythign away from a type-r, but it is not in the same class at all. A vette is one of the best bang for the buck cars out there. And I guess what you remain unable to see is that dollar for dollar when it comes to modding the C5 is gonna be faster (regardless of the sticker price on the car). I know that I sure as hell would not drive a Honda, unless it was my daily driver, if I was in the position to own a corvette (and I am the first to admit, I love Hondas). A bimmer, yeah no doubt they are nice, but they are still not the flat out sports car that a Vette is, especially a Z06. A BMW is a lot more luxury geared and I would own a mercedes before a BMW, especially now that I have had experience with both cars and actually driving them and having one in the family. But that is entirely outside the realm of my point. Hell just look at what won the ultiamte street car challenge, a viper, sure it may cost $70k, but a lot of times there are reasons behind those price tags. I think there is something that a lot of import guys over look. The cars we benchmark our cars off of are stock domestics for the most part. I LOVE to see Imports whoop up on domestics, I am an import fan myself. But like Scott stated, you drop 5k into a turbo setup on a R for instance and you drop that same 5k into a supercharger/turbo setup on a Vette, since that is the car at hand, and all the Honda is gonna see is taillights and I think we can agree on that for the most part. Just like the R has its niche in the car world so does the Vette. The R is a great handling, quick, FWD car and a probalby a blast to drive. The Vette is a Sports Car, it handles great, is fast, RWD, and is damn sexy. And it is geared toward a slightly older crowd. Lets not get into the def. of fast as I know everyone defines it different, but I think we can say for a car that comes off the showroom floor and is capable of mid/low 14's, high 13's in Z06's in stock form, up here it is pretty fast.
Anyway like I said Mark, I don't want to take anything away from you because your car does rock!! I am just making a general point.

me close minded...naw never that. Sticker price does matter to me... Sure you can mod it for 5k and be alot faster than the R for 5k but you have spent the extra thousands or so to get there and maintain it there. You get the same rush when you drive both, if you want the status of owning a vette more to you, just not my cup of tea, ecpecially when you lose to Honda.
Remember that post when the guy in the Civic beat a Vette, half of the Vette owners couldn't believe it (must be that "other" league their in)....Don't get me worng I'm not saying Vettes suck, they are a very nice car! again just not what I would spend my money on...if I could.

Actually a lot of them do have to do with performance and a lot of them have to do with styling, adn a lot of them have to do with demand. yes people do buy those cars for status, that is what people do. Especailly Americans, we are brand crazy bitches:D It is not just corvettes that people pay ungoldy amounts of money for, it is BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Cadalliac. People buy them for a reason, Status, when are able to afford those things you buy them becasue you can. People buy corvettes because the are sweet cars, because they do show some things about them(the person), becasue they are a TRUE sports car, and they are fast. I hate to say it, and people can say what they want, but most don't buy a Honda as their car of choice, they buy it because that is what they can afford. Sure a Vette cost $50k, but you still get the feeling of driving a real sports car, with torque, and great handeling if you decide to take it to the twistes . Both do not produce the same rush at all when driving them. I can honestly say there is no better sound in my world than a great sounding V8 engine. The sound alone changes the driving experience considerbally, not to mention the other factors about the cars that are extremely different......Anyway the money factor aside, as no one will ever agree on what is worth it, the vette is a nicer car hands down. Less practical yes, but I honestly don't think the people who buy them really buy them for practicallity
Maybe this video of a doug rippie modded vette with a 150 shot eating a 13 seocnd talon will make you see differently:) It is one of the coolest vids I have seen taken by someone on the street. I will see if I can get B to host it tomorrow.

Yup I've seen it... what if we posted a type-r beating a vette? wouldn't change my mind....
I'm not trying to make this Honda vs. Vetta cause that is just plain dumb. just glad to see the underdog beating the favorite I guess you can say.
Status can eat a dick! especially ones that are big headed because they own a vette.

Of course it wouldn't change your mind you dont want to see my point. The vette is nicer and faster. I just know I would rather have the vette because of what it is as a package. It just has more to offer, even when you look at it from the performance spectrum. Being the underdog is great, but if you want ot be the fastest then the underdog is not the way to go. I can probalby sum it up by saying on the street when a vette runs into an import it has nothing to worry about 8 out of 10 times. Or buy a supra and call it good:). Status means something to everyone that is why we do things like buy brand name clothes and things of that nature too, its not just a vehicle specific thing.

I've seen your point a long time ago, just dont want to read on how a vette is so great cause of status, performance cool, status....righht. I already know, again not my thing.
If we want to do in the same leauge I would take a Porsche over a Vette, sound better? hehe
I like a fast car..no matter what the make is!
Anyways just putting some fuel to the fire, if you want to see some dope videos check this link out and donate $5 to me since I'm so nice to show you guys it

If I could afford a Vette with minimal effort then I could afford to mod it. You go to look at it from the perspective that most Hondas are for the masses and nearly all Hondas are under $30k while the Vette being in the mid $40k new is for people withn money and if a car guy buys a Vette odds are it won't stay stock.
Say you buy a Type R and put 20% of the value into mods which comes to about $5,000 and buy a Vette and put 20% into mods ($9000+) and then see who's faster. You gotta remember a Vette is for people with a slight higher tax bracket than your average Type R owner.
Mark's car is still sweet but I'd have to take a ZO6 if I could afford it. -13.6s bone stock at Bandi is pretty good for stock.

Well i got lost in the thread...
I think the post is going into a complete wrong direction.. his post said. "I ownded a C5 2x"... not "What would you rather have..". Fact of the matter is he walked a C5 2x. I understand that if a C5 had 3G's worth or mods it would be faster.. but that is not what he was asking. Agreed they are in 2 completely different classes... but then again that was his point. I know my car is not faster then a C5.....(Yet!)
Don't take this the wrong way... i was just lost in the tangents.. and wanted to clarify things..

Wow, we got a nice little debate going on here:) Thanks for the support of my econobox vs. domestic muscle:) This was in no way a pissing match between the two cars, but I like everyones point none the less.
For the record, I have $2700 and some change put into my car, it's all in the turbo kit I pieced together, no suspention work etc, just $2700 in the motor so far. I'm adding approx. $1100 more in the immediate future(including clutch, VAFC, Injectors & Tuning) With these additions I'll be easily in the 12's(I assume) on street tires with full interior. So that's under $4,000 to put a high 15 second car here well into the 12's (again I assume). With weight reduction and slicks, who knows what is possible:) I'll never know becasuse she staying full interior and street legal forever.

i would like to add one more thing;
if i could afford the vette,it would be in my driveway as we speak, however since that's not the case. i should at least make that my target power level for my cheap assed civic.
