View Full Version : Car running poorly what could be cause?

My car seems to accelerate good in 1st and second but when i hit 3rd or up it just puts out. And when accelerating it doesnt feel very smooth, more like i can feel it slighty surging. Not studdering but just not smooth like it used to be. Got no smoke, or any tell tale bad signs of engine wear. I just know something is not right and its lost some speed. Also the idle is acting screwy. Everyonce in a while it surges up to 1.3k or even almost 2 and will stay there for a bit until it decides to go back down. Usually after i stop at a light after a hard run.Any ideas?

Also can someone give me the specifics on why a small shot say 50 or 75 nitrous system on my car wouldnt work.

My reasoning is that with a Big T-28 @ 16 psi isnt putting down enough HP to really worry about an occasional 50 shot.

The reason I was thinking of nitrous is that im gonna have to go with an act 2100 due to the fact that i own a 2g and I dont want crankwalk. With a 2100 i dont think I could be putting down 300-350+ without frying the clutch. The nitrous would give me a way to be reliable but still able to get into the 12's. Or is there some reason a 2g engine cant handle nitrous??

The shot is fine at that boost level, on good gas.

Quite frankly, I'd rather use a bigger turbo and have the power at my disposal all of the time.

With N2o, you have to have the bottle in the car, opened, and (ideally) at the proper pressure (bottle temperature).

As to why 2g's are not good for high boost & bigger shots:

Well the first thing I'd check is my spark plugs and go from there.

When was the last time you changed your tranny oil? (You can tell a lot form Tranny Oil). Checking the plugs is always a good idea. Do you know how to read your plugs? Did you put the plugs that are in your engine now yourself or did you pay to have it done?

My car would rev its-self at idel speeds. It was caused by a switch and censor on my Throttle (SP?) body. Another person had the same problem, but it was caused by a leeky Throttle Body Gasket, and a leeky Vacume line.

If a Vacume line is leeking. you would hear a hissing sound all the time. The noise would become loader when going up hill, and a power loss would be felt (When Going up hill).

I know how to read a plug, but i had new ones put in when I got the new engine 10k ago. Cant really hear a hissing sound due to the turbo spooling up when i get on it, which is when I notice power loss. Could it have anything to do with a bad alternater? Cause my batt died I got a new one and I still am having power problems at idle. Like lights dim, and car almost dies sometimes when taking off at low RPMs.

My thinking with the nitrous is i can save my car the extra stress of a bigger turbo and save money on new clutches due to having to use an act2100, but still hit 12's. Also It would give me more top end, cause my low end 1st and 2nd punch are great already.

If anything nitrous will put more wear & tear on your motor, as it's an instantaneous shock to the motor vs a turbo which gradually adds pressure.

Have you datalogged your car? If not, find someone with a logger and see what the ECU thinks is going on.

What exactly do you mean by "it just puts out"?

Puts out was a bad description. What i mean is there seems to be a power loss cause it doesnt pull hard above 3rd anymore.

First and second don't put much load on the engine. Third gear is where it's ALL at ;) and it sounds fairly obvious that your timing is getting yanked under any real power.

When's the last time you actually changed out your own fuel filter?

A bad alternator will cause major problems. If you drop below battery voltage, it messes up your injector's pulsewidth. The ECU uses battery voltage for that. Not good at all. Get that shit fixed right now or don't fucking drive it. It's a DSM, treat it like one!

The idle deal could be an ISC, it could be your throttle closed switch not getting a consistent ground all the time, could be a binding throttle cable...

When was the last time you searched for real DSM info on the internet? I'm just curious.

Go big turbo! Inhale cats, small dogs, small children and spit them out your exhaust.

If you have a 2G, just get yourself a junkyard six-bolt ('90-'92) and start building it now. Even a stock six-bolt is stronger than 2G shiet.

Oh i know i have alot to learn about cars but i try to do as much work as i can myself. Well it looks as though my DSM is gonna sit for a while as I have no money to fix it and it has a few expensive problems. Looks like ill be driving the bike even if its cold out. Dont want to make the problems worse by driving it. Ill just wait till school is over in a few months and work it all out then.

Haha yea but even in its crappy running state it still has more than enough balls to make a modded honda just a speck in the rear view mirror. :p
