Apparently there is a virus/worm spreading across the Internet and bringing about 1/3 of the Internet to its knees. The worm is infecting Microsoft SQL Server versions 6, 7 and 2000. I have been told that it affects any version below service pack 2 for these versions. It is only affecting TCP and UDP port 1434, which SQL Server communicates on.

Just FYI

Don't you love microsoft and all of its SHITWARE?

My God. It's a very good thing that linux is becoming more and more and more popular, and being installed on top of oh so many copies of windows.

So if linux ran the world, not microsoft, there would be no worms?

linux has its faire share of worms, viruses, and security holes as well.

The sad part though is that Micro$oft has had a patch out for this since July

There can be vulnerabilities in any operating system, including Linux. The difference with Linux and open source software is that the source code is available so any compitent programmer (most linux/unix admins are) can fix the problem themselves so there's no need to wait for the official patch. Microsoft used to really drag their feet, but they seem to be getting better. But, it wasn't until just recently that Microsoft started to take security seriously, while it has been a big part of UNIX OS'es for longer than I can remember. UNIX is a programmer's operating system, so it tends to have more compitent admins, and it's a lot more powerful. It's much more difficult for viruses to live on a UNIX box because of the no-bullshit security built into it's core. Sure, if infected code is run as root, it can take over the whole box, but that's what happens when you're inexperienced and do everything as root.

Anyways, the bottom line is that Microsoft makes shitty software because they can get away with it. Because of them, the majority of the population think that computers can't work worth a shit, so they don't expect or demand much at all. Microsoft is the Ford of the software industry. It's no surprise that Microsoft is starting to take security seriously now that more system admins are waking up and switching to better software.
