Hey everyone. I decided to boost my winter beater. Everything is going to be built from scratch. I picked this up about 2 years ago and just drove it around in the winter. Now she is going to have some bite to her.
Manifold, downpipe, and was built by a good friend of mine.

Super sexy! I need to remember this when it comes time to replace my manifold.

It's going to be a good while before I get there, but PM me a price and details just for shits and giggles. I am running a Turbonetics 60-1.

you got PM. Let me know. You can always check out my manifold if you want to see it in person.

Thanks. I'll be honest, it's on the not-so-important-end of a long list of things I need to pay for (some for the car, some not). If you still have it when I'm ready, I'll probably pick it up, but it will be a while.
Really clean work either way. I'm excited to see your build completed.

Everytime I see a link with custom in the heading I get scared. Its 90% of the time rice.

Rice would have been an eBay turbo kit. This my friend, isn't.
Checked in for this thread.
What are the turbo size injectors fuel Ect.... set up
Still on the 2.0?
What that manifold price?
hoaiss2000
11-07-2011, 06:14 PM
I'm running a holset hx35 turbo. Aeromotive fuel pump, and 650 cc injectors. Still the factory 2.0 engine.
How much power ur looking to.get?
I would be concern on the injectors size
hoaiss2000
11-07-2011, 09:07 PM
right around 400 whp. I am going to try to see what kind of power I could get on pump gas. If I'm not satisfied, I will change to E-85.
Just installed AEM Series 2 full standalone and Omni 4 bar map sensor
On order are stage 3 clutch and AEM UGEO and AEM boost gauge

It will be close, but he might make it if it's not E85. E85 on that setup is going to need bigger injectors.
hoaiss2000
11-08-2011, 08:10 AM
agreed. I will run a new fuel system if I don't get the power that I want. I think what I have right now should be good for pump gas.
Yeaaaa. U might be close
Honestly I would just, throw 1000s ,head studs e85. Shoot for bigger number

Thanks, I can always change out turbos in the future if it doesn't work out.
Any reason why you don't like the HX35?
Curtis
11-09-2011, 12:13 PM
No particular reason. They work, and they take a beating. It just doesnt fit. You have a nice RSX, nice K20, nice manifold, nice fab work, and then a junkyard turbo. LOL. I normally see them on single cam Civics.
That, and Holsets were cool before EVERYONE started using them. Back when they were 50 bucks on eBay with low miles. Now you get 200k mile beat to shit turbos for 300 bucks. Supply & Demand.
hoaiss2000
11-09-2011, 12:51 PM
I personally haven't seen them on any other car yet. You are right about being able to find one cheap though. There are a lot of them floating around. I'll see what I can get with this turbo. If anything, I can always change out to the new Batowheel compressor.

I think most people have moved on the Holset trend, and stepped up to bigger and better technology. But I would say about 5 years ago, they were a big deal. I still know of quite a few locals running around with them.
But I think you missed my point. You used to be able to get a Holset practically given to you. And then to make 400whp with one, thats what made it cool. Then everyone and their mom jumped on the bandwagon, and the Deisel guys realized they could get 400 bucks out of us Honda guys. And at that kinda price, I would rather buy a used Garrett or Precision, myself.
Here are a few cars with Holsets:
http://youtu.be/oWPO6qz193E
http://youtu.be/huyMuKSs6U4
Both cars at the start of this video had single slams with Holsets.
http://youtu.be/l13m52dOf08
All of these videos are a couple of years old now though.
But dont get me wrong. Theyre cool turbos. I just think theyre a bit overpriced now a days, and I think your car is too nice for such a turbo.
hoaiss2000
11-10-2011, 09:17 AM
Cool videos. I see what you are trying to say. Thanks. When I do decide to switch turbos, I think I'm going to go with a twin scroll. Give my a couple yeard when I build the motor.

Vehicle is finished. I just have to finish intstalling wideband and boost soleniod. Then off it goes to get it tuned.

If I am wrong smack me agaazi, but they seem to be welded with excessive heat, and are making TOO MUCH penetration.
You have to understand hoasis... agaazi does a bit of welding, its not just some numb nuts saying shit lol

maxed out the injectors. Also .89 A/R exhaust takes tooooooo long to spool. Time for some bigger injectors and smaller .70 A/R exhaust housing.

I probably exaggerated a bit, but I definitely would work on the consistency if I was your fabricator. It got the job done though, congrats on the numbers! I can't wait to get my K together

i thought all the holsets were measured in cm2? most 35's being 14cms, but some being 18 or 19cm2
Curtis
11-27-2011, 06:09 PM
They are. I was going to say the same thing. I think the HY35 had a 9cm2 housing, but dont know what it would take to swap. I think some of the HXs had a 12cm2 housing. Ive heard the 9 is closest to a Garrett .63, and the 12 is closest to a Garrett .82. But I dont know how accurate that is.

I've only mig welded so in my eyes, those welds were really good. I guess only someone that has a lot of experience can see those. But, I do agree with you that it gets the job done.

Holsets are on cm2. HY35's are found in automatic rams. They have the 9cm2 housing which is like a .63a/r. HX35's are found on the manuals and they are mostly 12cm2 housing which converts to .89a/r.

Seems like you know a lot about Holset's Curtis. I did some searching and you cannot swap a 9cm2 off the HY35 into the HX35. I ended up having to purchase a .70a/r housing from BorgWarner which will bolt up to the HX35 and I have to have the downpipe modified. Tuner says that this will hit full boost 1K RPM sooner. So about 3K rpm's of raw power.

Oh, I forgot that Bullseye made housings for the Holsets, which are pretty common with the DSM guys from what I remember. That should definitely help out your spool time.

hmm, i thought the conversions were lower. as in i thought the 12cm2 was closer to a .63A/R. im not arguing, its been awhile since ive looked into that stuff.
curtis, your familiar with adolphs car right? i coulda sworn when he did his first holset/sohc combo it spooled pretty fast. did he have an hy?
Curtis
11-28-2011, 12:15 AM
I think he had an HX35. When I asked him, he told me he hit full boost around 7k. LOL.
But with drag cars, its not such a big deal. Once youre in boost, youre in boost.

I myself ain't seeing full boost until 6K rpms. But like Curtis stated, once I'm in boost, the car pulls like a frieght train through all the other gears.

lol, oh, nevermind then. i havent talked to adolph since before he built that car. i only heard from jeff when mike first dyned it, jeff was telling me how perfect that holset was cause it started spooling around 4000 rpms. that was a couple years ago though, maybe im remembering wrong.
on a side note, wouldnt a twin scroll manifold help the holsets spool? i understand a bunch of honda guys have used them with regular manifolds for years with successs, but since it does have a divided housing it would benefit and spool faster with a matching manifold right?
hoaiss2000
11-28-2011, 06:10 PM
I too have wondered if splitting the manifold into a twin scroll will help?
hoaiss2000
11-28-2011, 06:31 PM
can't wait to get this new exhaust housing on. Hopefully I can get it to full boost at around 5k. If not, I need a new turbo.
Curtis
11-28-2011, 08:26 PM
Properly paired, a twin scroll manifold would help quite a bit.
And yea, I dunno about Mike's car too much. But I remember when I still had the DOHC ZC, I was asking him about the HX35. I think he told me full boost by ike 6500 or so. Could have started spooling around 4500-5k maybe? I really am not sure. But I think he was revving out to 9k or 9500, so the powerband was useful.
hoaiss2000
11-29-2011, 08:43 AM
that sounds about right. I was watching rpm's yesterday and I start to spool at 4500.
How about a small shot of N2O to help get things spooled quicker?

There's just something about NOS that scares the crap out of me. This is my daily driver/winter beater so I'm actually fine with the way it is now. It drives like a N/A RSX would around town but it's a whole different animal when I mash the throttle. For the track, I have a two-step so waiting for it to spool off the line is not a problem.

Thanks. Car was done in like November. Boosted it at 130K miles. Drove around for about a month and the rings gave up. Been waiting on parts and such and now she is fully built. 5 months later lets see how she does.
