how much of an advantage is there having a LSD as opposed to an open diff. when drag racing a FWD car?

say a GSR w/o lsd vs an identical gsr w/ JDM GSR tranny?

I don't have hard numbers, but think of it this way.

Open diff = 1 wheel
LSD = 2 wheels

So you're doubling your traction. BTW, if you're going to tear into your tranny, go ahead and swap in a JDM ITR FD. That'll make a huge difference, too.

im not gonna crack open the tranny, im just gonna buy a JDM GSR tranny w/ LSD & swap it in, then sell my GSR tranny

Get the LSD. It will also help you around those corners so that you have traction going to both wheels.

LSD's help alot more on a road course than the drag strip. Look at acurabro, he pulls 1.7 60's with his open diff.

I don't know a lot about transmissions. But if you're going to do a tranny swap. You might want to look at the 97+ Type-R trannies. I've heard of them going for around $1000. I dunno how much you're spending on the other one, so this may be way overpriced. As far as LSD's go, I understand that aftermarket ones work much better than the stock ones. The Quaife goes for $800 on Modacar. They also come with a lifetime guarentee that isn't void if you race the car. Just some things to consider.

It made a huge difference on my hatch. it helped me keep the NOS power at bay.

no, your wrong, 2 wheels putting power to the ground is better than 1.

Its like watching trucks to burnouts and one tire spins...I call them peg-legs.

I've noticed that open diff cars seem to get about the same 60 foot times as LSD cars. My old Sentra had a viscous LSD in it, and I never seemed to do better than anyone else on launches. Of course, it was nice being able to spin BOTH wheels. Maybe if your on slicks, an LSD would be worthwhile so you can equally heat both tires in the staging area, and make the most of all that traction. On street tires, the FWD car is gonna spin anyway. It doesn't really seem to matter whether it is one tire, or both tires.

To me, the biggest difference came in handling. In tight corners the LSD allows the inside wheel to help pull the car around the corner, vs. just spinning. In straight line accerlation, the difference isn't as pronounced, IMO.

Also when you distribute the power to both wheels you decrease the chance of breaking an axle... and we all know the strongest part of our hondas when making power ;)

Yeah, get the Type-R transmission... is has better gearing than the GS-R and a limited slip differential. You'd be faster AND have better traction. If you get the JDM Type-R transmission, it also has a 4.785 final drive which will help acceleration even more.

actually, im avoiding the ITR tranny for one reason...BOOST...

since there arent any LS tranny's with LSD, im opting for the JDM GSR tranny w/ lsd

Quaife, the LSD I mentioned earlier is available for the LS tranny...or the GSR tranny...or the R tranny.

I was wrong, the Quaifes are $895

I wouldn't worry about getting an LS tranny unless you want the better gas mileage or a top speed of 190 (assuming the boosted engine makes enough power, which I doubt).

Quaifes are great quality products.. They are warrentied for the life of the car even if you race on them which lets you sleep better, but it comes down to cost. 900 for LSD alone or 1200ish for a slightly used tranny w/ LSD. It is a toss up.

I would agree on getting a gsr tranny. Better gearing for boost. I hate shifting into 5th gear in the quarter mile with my si tranny.

The Si and Type R have the same gear ratio's correct? I have been finishing the 1/4 mile in 4th gear...my 13.5 Run trapped at 108mph.

me too, but just barely. That will be different with the Nitrous, I'll be halfway through 4th then.

I shift into 4th right before crosssing the line... with no boost.

Man, I thought you guys were talking about something else. I was about to say I wouldn't recommend LSD + Drag Racing.
