Hey Guys,
I'm new to the boards and I'm just wondering who else has a WRX and what kind of times they run at bandi. Basically... who can beat me at the track or is interested in having a suby meet this spring with us WRX guys.
Thanks,
Eric

I think there is couple of other WRXs on this board in the 12s and one was wagon (Phast ran a 12.6 I think) but with a 13.2 you're one of the quickest at the moment.

With those mods i would say a best of a high 13 second run, depending on how hard your working that stock turbo. My fastest time is a 13.2 and my fastest trap is a 102 (these times being on about 16-17psi) with the following mods:
-VF22
-MRT 3" turbo back exhaust
-stock TMIC
-AEM CAI
-STi injectors + GSS342 + Link/UTEC Ecu
-AVC-R
That's about it for the major power adders. Phast ran a 13.0-13.2 off the bottle at about 1.5bar (peak). pace has run a mid 13 off the bottle. Both of them are mid 12's on the bottle (phast - 75shot with his VF30 turbo) and (pace = 50shot with his VF22 turbo).
If I can cut a decent 60' (<2.0) with my new 18G setup and am able to hold 20-22psi to redline I WILL get high 12's this year. But I don't have the turbo bolted on yet so we will see how it goes :).
Oh and for reference a stock WRX runs in the low 15's high 14's at Bandimere. If you really did run a 13.25 what was your trap speed? That is MUCH more indicative of you hp.

Dustin,
Why the war?
I just got back from visiting my best freind in arizona. I had a chance to run the car with my new mods at the local track. Thats why I didn't say my time was at bandi. I don't know what I run at bandi yet or I would have posted it! I sorry if your pissed you don't have your car anymore or something but there is no reason for this. I'm going to take the car to the next level and hopefully you can be happy about it.
Thanks,

no war at all, Since you didn't state that the times were at sea level i was a bit confused. Thought you were throwing out numbers...can you scan the timeslip? I would like to compare the incremental times. What mods have you added since you've had it? sorry for the misunderstanding

Yes,it really does help if you post a 1/4 mile time also post where it was if it wasn't Bandi,we all assume our times are all achieved locally since the board is based here at over 5000ft give or take a little.

Are you WRX guys familiar with a guy with a '98 RS making mega power with a Legacy Turbo engine? This thing was sick fast and from 80mph I was able to hold him off to just over a 100mph and then just pulled away. This thing is a 12 second car at Bandi for sure.

Yah I have met him on a couple of occasions and we chatted for a while last time we saw each other at a meet. The only problem with his car is he uses a dog-box tranny and as a result it is a VERY harsh ride (shifting and even taking off). But you are right he does make big power. The thing is the turbo he runs on that 2.2L is about the same size as a VF22 and he runs about 25psi (midrange) tapering down to about 17-18psi by redline. He has yet to actually run a 1/4 mile or even a full dyno pull becuase he was always breaking somthing. First the tranny, then the diffs, and now he expects the axels to start snapping [heh]. It is fast though.

I don't know :). It all really depends on 2 things. your 60' and how much boost you are running. When I ran my time of a 13.1-13.2 I was running about 16-17psi with a 60' ranging from 1.84-1.90. From what pace said about your turbo it sounds pretty good... so I will say this. If you run 17psi and hold it to redline and if you pull at least a 1.9 60' you will trap at 101-103mph.
I personally plan on installing my FCD and running about 21-22psi on pump gas for a nice 12 second time slip ;).

David,
just wanted to make this crystal. You're say that if I run only 17 lbs. and hit a 1.9 60', I will trap at 101-103? Isn't that what you hit the traps at and you ran a 13.1?
Interesting.........Thanks,
Todd

Yah that's pretty much what I did... but what the hell do I know ;). Harvey runs about 17psi and he runs a 13.5@100 with the stock EXHAUST!!! But he has injectors, unichip, VF30. But still he has very minimal mods for his times... just goes to show what good driving can do [heh].

Hey Dustin did you ever have boost dropout problems? In first gear by the time I get to redline I'm only boosting 10-11 psi. This might make sense if it happened in the other gears but it doesn't!! It only happens in first...is it possible the turbo is nearing it's death or is it something else? If it's just the turbo that's ok because I'll have a new one shortly anyways.
On a side note... any of you wrx guys ever hear of a twin turbo set-up on a wrx? I was thinking that our main issue with high boost is spool up time on the 2.0l but with a twin setup we could have the best of both worlds, high boost and quick spool. Any thought on this?
Thanks,
Eric James

Never had any problems losing boost...try adjusting the MBC.

boost taper is a simple matter of back pressure caused by the 20% faster spinning of the turbo + the fact that the stock turbo is simply too small for this altitude to do much more than that.
Even with my VF22 and an extra pre-load spring to get the wastegate pressure up to 15-16psi I would ALWAYS taper down to 16-17psi by redline in 1st and 2nd gear. The main reason it's so hard to hold boost in 1st and 2nd gear is becuase the engine is revving so fast through the rpms that the amount of gas going through the engine is simply too much to be forced through the turbine = forces wastegate open.
And WOW 13.5 on the stock turbo. Impressive indeed. What boost level and 60' was that? ANd more curiously what trap speed was on that time slip?
As far as the twin-turbo setup yah I have heard about it. And you can actually use the same setup (maybe with some minor adjustments) from the old B4's since they were twin turbo. There are a couple of issues with it however. The twin-turbo setup on the B4 was made on a Right hand drive car (so the steering rack is in the way), and secondly cost. But it would be IDEAL for up here. have somthing like the stock turbo(or smaller) and then a secondary turbo like a 1820 and you would be set!! I have yet to see or read about one. Probably mostly becuase the majority of people who have this car are a sea level and as such they do not have the need for such a setup as they don't have the problem spooling larger turbos like we do.

Hey David,
Thanks for the explanation. Here's the weird thing tho.. this just started happening like 2 days ago. Before that I could always hold at 16psi in every gear. Sometimes I would even get a little bit of boost creep up to 17psi so this is quite a change. Have any ideas why this would happen?
Thanks,
Eric James

Now are you looking at some sort of peak/hold value OR are you actually looking at a boost gauge throughout the WHOLE RPM range? Becuase I used to "think" I was holding boost by looking at what I peaked at. You would be the first out of about 15 people I know (up here) who can hold boost to redline on the stock turbo.
ericjames
01-27-2003, 11:17 AM
Nope I could hold it all the way. I have the defi-link gauges that allow you to record for about 45 secs and I've recorded my 0-60 and 0-100 many times so I'm pretty sure it used to stay at 16psi. Can you back me up on this Dustin? Do you remember ever having boost drop?

boost would always hold steady, according to hte defi's.

Jay (Phast) ran a 12.69, I ran a 12.67 (@110). Both of us were on the bottle, with near identical setups (fueling upgrades, EMS, VF30, etc.) FWIW, that was actually at the same event too (IDRC 'Team Challenge'). Jay pulled off a 1.7x 60' IIRC which is pretty darn impressive.
dustin:
I am absolutely astonished to hear that a stock-turbo'd WRX broke 13s up here. The best I have seen is low 14s, so it sounds as though you got yourself a factory freak. Be happy. When I ran a VF30 I trapped at 93 (with a poor tune), and my buddy in the lane next to me with a Forced Performance modified stock turbo trapped at 89mph.
What was the trap speed on that 13.5 second run?
ericjames:
I too thought that I was holding boost 'til the redline. Then I hooked up a high resolution datalogger and low and behold; I was dropping 2-3psi. That was with a peak of 18psi on both a VF30 and VF22. The gauges can be deceptive, especially when you are concentrating on other things. A few factors are now helping my VF22 to hold a little more boost, namely a larger TMIC and also an external spring fitted to reinforce the wastegate.
Before splashing on another turbo, maybe keep an eye on what David and I have going on over the next few weeks, as we experiment with the 16G (big) and/or the 18G. The IHI VF series are overpriced and do not flow great numbers. Sourcing the bolt-on cores myself I can get an 18G built for around $800, which is about $400 less than the reputable turbo shops are currently asking.

Don't forget that Todd is spraying too. With the front mount and the 1818, my guess is that he will break my trap record of 110.6 with ease. Assuming his UTec is tuned for the juice.
I'm guessing his car is capable of trapping around 113-114. As you said; the E/T he can pull will be dependent upon his 60' and whether that 1818/GReddy combo will spool fast enough. With the nitrous, I think he'll be ok.

I will, hopefully, be getting my 18G this week somtime and when i get my car back next weekend it will go in and I live in the Springs.
I haven't really tried that many setups so far. I went from the stocker to the VF22 for the last 40,000 miles or so. I have been in cars with the 1820, VF30, and various VF22's, and some stock turbo hybrids. Oh and I also tried a hybrid garrett 50-trim (compressor side) turbo.

FWIW, there is another kid on COSR running 13.7@98 or so on the stock turbo.
His mods are Greddy Profec-B, PDE Uppipe and downpipe, Greddy EVO, and AEM CAI.
He has no engine management and I'd be willing to bet that the car is a bit lean due to the CAI.
It's not that hard to go 13s on the stock turbo, it appears.

I guess not! Until now I had thought that Tim (STiedUp) from Evergreen was the quickest on the stock turbo. I thought he was running flat 14s, but I may well be mistaken. Last I saw he was basically stock but for an MBC.
Eric: The 18G will be inside a bolt-on TD05H housing from an older Subaru that was not imported into the USA. These cores are not the easiest things to come by. I know some of the turbo specialists have some in their possession that they will not readily part with. So basically you will have to look to the UK or Australia to source them.
I am located in the Conifer area.

Until I can afford a 6MT, I won't be steppin' anywhere. With this amount of power, I know the tranny is a ticking bomb. I won't run the strip again until I am willing and able to replace it with something stronger.
