I have FINALLY located a decent sounding AWD model. It's a 1990 Tsi. 16G, 2.5" exhaust with cat, Japanese transmission and transfer case, ACT clutch, 17" Konigs and new Timing belt. It has 97k miles.

$3500.

The guy says he's affiliated with a shop down in Pueblo that builds SCCA Rally cars. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Anyone know him?

I am going to try to view the car in person in the next day or two. He says the body is clean with only a few minor dings. The interior is very clean.

I am somewhat concerned about the premature transmission/transfer case failure, but I considering it has been replaced, I don't know how much to worry about it.

Am I getting warmer, or should I keep looking?

I would try to find one that has nothing done to it IMHO. Maybe some little old lady has one for sale.

I completely agree.

Anyone can tell you anything about a car, and you never really TRULY know what the car has been through.

If at all possible, maintain your steadfastness for a 90-92 AWD. The 90-92 have 6-bolt blocks. 'Nuf said there!
90-91 have pop-up lights
A "proper" 92 will have fixed lights, a four-bolt rear and a six bolt block. This leaves only the bigger brakes of the 93-94 model to be desired as a stock option. But in '93 they got shitty cheap on the rods, the headbolts and on the block.

Don't worry about the tranny, yet. Start pushing very low twelves consistently and then you can probably plan on it though.

IMHO, that '90 is a decent option for the mods vs the price. If you find a stock model for less, it's not gonna cost a lot less $$wise and you'll be starting from scratch on the mods and possibly maintenance issues as well.
