My best guess on this problem is the alternator, but sometimes when i go to start the car it will crank over then die, after a couple tries it will almost die then running, the problem seems to be worse while the radio/headlights or anything is on. I'm thinking alternator but maybe someone else knows what the problem really is, I don't want to replace anything till I know what the problem is.

Thanks,
Brian

That sounds like a wierd one man. The alternator dying wont ahve anything to do with a starting problem unless it is so fukked it isnt charging hte battery at all. If thats the case it usually cranks really slow and then wont crank any more at all. It also turns on the battery light when it croaks.

You may have an ignition switch or a fuel pump relay failing. those are both common failures on that car.

that does kinda ring of an ignition switch or PGMFI relay problem doesnt it?

well to check to see if your alternator is bad, take off the - first and then the +. Have your lights on to see if they dim...if they do, it's the alternator, if they dont, it could be just a bad battery.

That's a really good way to cook the ECM with a good alternator. Risky.:smashfrea

wait, I don't get it, how would that cook the ECU?

The ECU gets its Voltage from the Alt. when you unplug the battery the ELD (Electronic load detector) sees 0 volts and tells the alternator to go full field and charge at full capacity. I have measured Honda alternators at full capacity at 18 volts and 110 Amps before. ECMs do not appreciate wide voltage variences if you catch my drift.

ah so basically you pull the + and - wires from the battery while the car is running? Fuck that, too dangerous!

Thats what he suggested Brian do to see if alt was bad. Pretty soon more than just alt is bad. POOF!
