I just met a chick with one of these bad boys and have always wondered a few things about them. Are they considerably heavier then their Eclipse "counterpart"? Hom much slower are they stock for stock etc? Any differences motorwise etc?
BTW the girl is cool as hell, she already has custom exhaust and turned up the boost a bit:) I'm hopefully going to do a FMIC for her sometime:)

you can do a front mount for her as long as you mount her from the rear too :D

not much of a Mitsu fan, but I thought the VR4 was the 3.0 twin turbo found in the 3000 GT, just under a Galant (or a Diamante) hood. I'd think the weight is in favor of the Eclipse, but the power-to-weight ratio definitely swings towards the Galant VR4.

I'm a DSM novice, the Galant VR4 I believe has the Eclipse turbo motor, not the 3000GT.

THey have the same 4g63 as the eclipse from what I remember, not the 3kgt motor. RichardT on here should be able to give you some info on them. He had a pretty quick vr4 back in the day.

that could very well be the case.
I know Galants were equipped with the 3.0 so I thought it would only be fair to add the twin turbo and make them insane.

The Galant VR4s had the same motor as the Turbo AWD Eclipse.
2.0L DOHC Inline 4, rated at 195hp, 203 lb-ft of torque
Easily modded well beyond that, and easily one of the ultimate sleeper cars of all time!

Me and my brother (Richard T) had a conversation about the new Galant VR-4's after finding out that they where twin turbo from the profile in Gran Trismo 2. Unfortuanly they haven't sent a new VR-4's over since 1992. The dispalcment is slightly smaller then the 3000GT.

Galant VR4's have the same basic drivetrain as a Eclipse GSX. I think about everything is identical. Motor, tranny, turbo, rear end's. They can be modded just like the GSX's can be with all the same stuff.

The Galant VR-4 is couple hundred pounds heavier than an AWD DSM. Mine weighed 3460 pounds with me, the spare, full interior, and sunroof option.
The engine is the same with the exception of a red valve cover, and slightly different intercooler. The GVR4 actually had a *tiny* (non visable) front mounted intercooler rather than the tiny side mount found in the Eclipes/Talon/Laser.
One other problem is the 3 bolt rear end as the 4 bolt found in mid '92 and up DSM's wasn't introduced until after the GVR4 productin run. From what I understand the conversion process is nearly identical except the GVR4 has a 4 wheel steering lines to contend with. Most people just remove this when doing the 4 bolt swap.
One other engine bay difference is that the battery and air filter swapped locations.
In straight line performance, the GVR4 is about a tenth or two behind a similarly modded DSM, or atleast this has been my loose observation over the years.
EDIT: I really would call mine quick. The best I pulled was 15.3@90 (1st and only day participating at Bandi). Though I did a ton more stuff afterwords, I doubt it would have hit even high 13's. You 1.8t guys do about the same for about equal or less and you do it with FWD. Perhaps it was the driver....:smashfrea

I've never met her but my friend Chad lives with her boyfriend Chris. Chris is the one that has a shirt that says PFI SUCKS. He also has a pretty sweet civic with a swap. I've tried to get him to come on here but I think he's too cool or something. Not sure if they're still dating but her car is there sometimes when I'm there. They just don't come out of the bedroom, heh.

Hmm, interesting. When was the last time you saw her car over there? Just curious. I met her a while back and she's only mentioned an ex that drives a talon or eclipse.

The Jetta is still a nice sleeper but the VR4 doesn't need any help in the traction department. AWD baby. :)
The GVR4s shared the drivetrain, engine, tranny etc with the eclipse/laser/talons. All based on the 4g63.
Nah - that would be the 1.8t Audi A4. *ahem*

The Galant is a wicked sleeper car. I personally know 2 that are 12 second cars. One white, and the other is gray. One has a baby seat. :-)
In 1996 it went the GT platform which now houses the 6g72. The same motor as in the 3000gt but non-turbo and single overhead cam. The US version is obviously less powerful than it's non-imported counterpart. The 3000GT/vr4-Stealth TT/RT is the only car imported with the twin turbo 6g72. The GTZ is the fully loaded version with the Rally Art wing on the trunk lid. The front and rear sway bars are oversized to 1", compared to 3/4" from the ES models. They also have a higher spring rate to give i more of a sporty feel. It also has about 15 more horses due to a larger intake and free-er flowing factory exhaust.
Got one in the garage (wifes car), next to the stealth. :-)
If the TT Stealth ever gets to "test out the cage", expect another sleeper on the road.....with a baby seat.

Erron S. Has anyone ever put a 3000gt engine into one of those. I was considering that a while back.

I "kinda" raced a grey one a couple of weekends ago in the Springs. He didn't want to go from a stop, but he did a ricer flyby, and I tried to keep up as soon as he came up next to me, but he had too much momentum. I guess that I'm too used to racing in the Supra and letting people get next to/ ahead of me and then running them down. Can't really do that in the S4.
I'd sure like a rematch.... from a dead gig or an even roll. :D

Yeah, it's been done over here before. In Japan, they sell them with the TT 6g72 motor. They have a different name for it, but i can't remember. With the twins, it's the next step above the GTZ, the VR-4 and also has the option for all wheel drive.

Yes, they all bolt right on with minor changes. I've seen a couple with the DOHC heads on them. The timing belt and tensioner is from the 3kgt as well as the heads. Mine is totally stock per the wifes request. What a great road trip car..

PS- I only read the 1st post and the ones on this page so I dont know if this was already stated..
but the Galant VR4 is considered a DSM (widely debated by nitpickers) it has the Turbo AWD Eclipse motor in it... (4g63), and some say that because it wasnt part of the partnership between chrysler and mistubishi it isnt a dsm, others say that because it has the chrysler engine it IS a dsm... i could go on for awhile with all the lame theories i have heard.
well who really gives a fuck. think what you want. :)

Me and Stu talked to that guy a while back. His best run was a 12.5 up here. Hes got a "sleeper" 16g with a decent amount of boost. Its a nice car, baby seat and everything :)
