View Full Version : xbox 360 disk
My son picked up a 360 yesterday and it came with a 512 meg memory card. We'd much prefer a disk drive. Anyone have a good lead on where to find them on the cheap? 60 or 120 gig preferred.
Thanks.

You need an xbox360 hard drive if you want game storage memory. Externals are only really good for music and movies, as you cant save games on it. Not all externals work with it either. If you do decide to buy an external anyways, do some research as to which ones will work, or get one like mine.
I have a 200GB that isn't supposed to be compatible, but is. I read somewhere that anything over 30mb isn't supposed to work.
The middle of the road 360 comes with a 60 gig, and the high end comes with a 120 gig. No more than 30 meg is usable?!?

john, the drives are proprietary connectors and only the MS branded ones will work. There is a program to get the basic xbox owners a hard drive on the cheap as the fall update will require a lot of storage space I believe.
Note that pretty much any usb drive will work, or you can use your network shared drives as well for media storage. For console data though, saves, downloaded games and movies from xboxlive, etc, are going to require an MS drive or memory card. You WILL want one too since the upcoming fall update is going to allow you to rip n boot data off of the HDD, which means less DVD wear and much better loading times.
I'll find and post the info when I get home tonight.

If you have a base model XBOX, go HERE (http://www.xboxstorageupgrade.com/hh/web/home/hhauthentication.jsp?ssLocale=en_US) and enter your serial number and console ID. You can find that info in the system blade of your xbox dashboard. More complete instructions are on the site above.
Once it verifies your console, you can order a 20 gig hard drive for $20. They're refurbished units, but $20 is amazing.
If you're getting an error saying you're ready for the live experience or something and nothing about the $20 hard drive offer, it's because you've hooked up a hard drive to your base model before and MS has voided the offer to you.
I should have included the fact that he bought the console used.
When I went to the xboxstorageupgrade website, I got this:
"According to our records you own a console which has enough memory to connect to Xbox LIVE and live the new Xbox Experience. Have fun!
If you feel you are receiving this message in error and own an Xbox 360 or Xbox 360 Arcade console please validate your serial number and reenter it here. Xbox 360 Pro and Elite consoles come with enough memory and are not eligible for this upgrade."

Thank You for clarifying Street Kings.
I'm curious about that article you mentioned though.
