So I got it unfortunately. I researched on Google and I found that the RegClean software was the most suggested software to get rid of the thing, but it didn't work for me. I used it in normal mode and in safemode several times. I ran Search and Destroy also in both normal and safemode, but still no good.

The virus is some stupid one that has internet explorer running in a hidden instance. It'll ocasionally play the sounds of those stupid pop ups "Congratulations you've won an iPpd" or whatever. I can ctrl-alt-delete and task manager end the thing, but it'll come back in a minute or two. The problem is it's sucking up huge amounts of memory, usually around 70% or higher.

Anyone had any experience in this and know how to get rid of it other than reformatting?

What are you using for an antivirus / antispyware package?

Rather than try to remove iexplore.exe (because its integral to the PC) you need to understand how it is vulnerable, and can leave open a "back door". See the following link:
http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/how-does-iexploreexe-virus-gets-on-to-my-system/

AND GET REAL ANTIVIRUS! AVG is not acceptable.

Or I can hook you up with some commercial protection software, as that's what my employer does. PM me if interested.

I've been running Norton Systemworks for a few years, however on this system I was a bit lazy and it was expired for a bit before I got to update it to the new edition :smashfrea

Is this something that McAfee would catch? I update it weekly.

Norton isn't really any better.

I say boo on Norton and McAfee, but McAfee is probably the better of the 2 if I had to chose. I like ZoneAlarm myself.
