If the door won't open then open the case and try a new power lead.

Alright I dont know what most of you said, But I think I have Windows 98, and yes I have a CD drive and a CD-R. the CD drive is E, and the Burner is F, but it no longer shows F and it wont open or do anything.

OPen up your CPU box and unplug the cable that is connected to the burner and let it sit for 5 minutes and then plug it back in and restart your computer, it should be able to pick it up during the boot process. But shut your pc off before opening the box.

i had that almost same problem except mine wouldn't' close. So I had to call Dell *booo* and some tech came out and repalced it, he said that a piece was broken. Try that if you still gotta warranty

Pulling the IDE cable off of the drive is not going to do a thing. If the drive door won't open when you push the button and there are no lights on the drive then it's power. Power leads go out all of the time. You should have plenty of others coming out of your power supply. Try one of those. If the drive still doesn't power on, it's hosed.

So if it doesnt even show up under my computer, I should pull out some cords that lead to it and plug it back in?

the power lead is the smaller plastic pin with 4 wires. the IDE cable is wide and flat, pull both out, then replace them in the same place you pulled each, and be certain to do it exactly in the same position. they probably will not fit inverted, but I warned you!

Make sure the computer is turned off and that you plug the drive back in in the same direction like he said above. It's beveled so it only goes in one way, but i've seen people get the plug in backwards enough to fry the drive....

Yeah, that's a good point. Pin 1 or the red stripe on the IDE cable should go towards power.
