If they don't, for starters you're fucking insane, but... they will after you read this.

HOAs are a creation of the municipalities, gotta pay attention at local elections if you want to change something about them.

thats why we dont have one in the hood  seriously we dont though..
my parents though, are actually kicking off the board members, and are going to become the new board... only because they just kicked out one of closest friends out of their house, for not paying HOA fee's.. but if my parents can over turn the board, before the house is foreclosed/sold.. they can get the house back for our friends...
HOA = retards with power....

Wow, thats crazy. I've had run-ins with my HOA and look forward to getting the hell out of here.
That gate looks great, seems absolutely crazy that she's just trying to provide safety for her children and gets told to remove it.

Not all HOA's are bad. Mine is quite good, actually. Pay $50 a quarter ($200 a year), we have multiple parks that are clean and maintained in the community and they have reasonable "rules" that are easy to abide by. We have a large open space to jog and/or walk dogs, etc. And, the rules are for the better anyways...If you don't like it, attend the board meetings and voice your opinion or better yet, try to get on the board and force your opinion on others :D
I do agree however, that it is silly for this particular hoa to make them remove a gate on their fence...

My neighborhood used to fall under a covenant, but we all decided not to renew it due to various conflicts with our HOA. Some of their interpretations were ridiculous. You couldn't even stain your deck or fence, so after about a year all the woodwork would look like shit.
I've already decided I will not live in a covenant controlled neighborhood again.

HOA-All the bullshit of an apartment, but in a house.
Im so glad my place is owned by my very good friend. I can have all my vehicles in my back yard. No bitching from anyone.
I live in a neighborhood without an HOA, and while I am glad I can do whatever I want, at other times, I wish we did have an HOA. Several of the houses here in the neighborhood have gorgeous lawns. I have an alright one. Many houses have dirt and weeds for a lawn, and it looks awful. Lots of people don't weed, and it looks pretty bad. Some people have like ten cars but parking for two, so the other cars spill out and they park in front of neighbor's houses (like mine!). Hey, I don't want your ugly truck parked in front of my place.
Of course, it's easy to become too strict, as the article shows. But it'd be nice to have at least some minimum standards.

Except that they've gotten so ridiculous that many people, including myself, would pay more money for a house that doesn't have an HOA. But being single and living alone, it made more sense for me to buy a condo, which pretty much necessitates an HOA. They make sense for condo's and some townhouses, since it's a good way to pool money together to take care of the community areas and shared utilities, but there are limits. Mine has a bunch of silly and petty rules, none of which prevent me from having a redneck neighbor that parks his big ugly POS'es in front of my place.
But I feel much safer knowing that my HOA explicitly prohibits people from shooting guns inside their condos, or out front in their lawns. If they do this, they will get a warning letter in the mail, and if they do it again, they could face a $50 fine. Never mind the fact that it's an arrestable criminal offense, and could very easily escalate to a felony in most cases... I'm sure that the threatening letter from the HOA is going to be what really deters people from doing it.
When it comes time to buy a house, I'll specifically be looking for a place with no HOA. They're rare and in demand, so the price will be higher, but I'll pay it.

If an HOA could confiscate dogs that bark at me every time I go into my own backyard, I would want an HOA.
I suppose the grass is always greener.... but man, I hate that dog.

I guess I would have to agree, everytime I go in the back yard, those 3 loud bastards make sure to let me know they are there Most of the time they wait till I am close and not looking before they bark, which usually is pretty startling. I also love it when they bark like shit in the middle of the night. Good times.

Our HOA fees are voluntary - 30+ year old neighborhood. They actually do a decent job and getting things cleaned up in the neighborhood - only if we could get rid of one deadbeat on our cul-de-sac!
