Hello Hai! I am thinking about going with a b20 vtec in my car so I can rebuild/build the old 17, just wondering if its pretty much the same as doing an LS/vtec(will I neeed the goldenj eagle kit)? I am also wanting to put CTR pistons in there to raise the compression, but I have read on other boards that this combo can slap the valves. I can get a pretty good deal on a b20z, pistons are bad, crank and block are good.
Thanks! I'll add more when I think of more!

the golden eagle kit is what you need as long as you get the 84mm bore headgasket with the kit, and i do believe CTR pistons only come in 81mm, not 84mm.

Thanks Jeremiah! THey do have ctr pistons with a .25 overbore available as well. If these won't work, is there another decent OEM piston available to to raise my comp? I don't want to spend too much money, as I can afford it I want to get forgesd low comp pistons for the b17. Just want to know if I can get away with a b20 with a total cost of 500(not including price of the block), as an interim motor whole I build the b17.

yO foo, use your other b17 oil pump on the b20. I'd say if your on a budget find a lower mileaged b20 and run it. You have an extra head laying around, we can do it and you'd have no down time;-)

Thanks Ted! Yeah, I was thinking of taking what I need ofgf my other block and building this one on a stand. No down time is a plus! My motor is just worn out and ion need of a rebuild, figure I'd throw in the 20 and take my time with the 17. Then when I'm done with the 17 sell the 20 and boost! I'll call ya in a lil, been a busy day today!

Werd, find a low mileaged motor and don't worry about the rebuild, slap on some ARP's, P61 head and Bam, InstaTorque cheap.

Why not say the hell with the 17 all together and boost the crvtec setup? It would spool better than the 17.

Yessir Ted, thats the plan. I figure that would be the cheaper alternative while I build the 17.

Yes it would. Honestly if I could, I would go wioth a b18 and boost the shit out of it. But...
I have 2 complete b17 swaps, and I want to keep the original engine in the car. Its rare to see b17s, its even rarer to b17's making an assload of power. So I guess I am penalizing myself just to be different :p
Plus I heard b20's are unreliable on boost or juice, due to the extremely thin cylinder walls.

B20's do have thin cylinder sleeves but lets not forget that it is all about the tune that decides the reliabiltiy this thread on honda-tech is devoted to stock sleeve b20vtec NA setups, http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread/1555476 and if you search thru the pages (I'm to lazy right now) you'll find a setup that made 264 whp and I can't remember the torque, on stock sleeves at 84.5mm and he is running like 14.1 compression so that should give you an idea of how strong they are under the right tune so I wouldn't hesitate to boost it depending on what you have to tune with, also if you wanted to stay naturally aspirated RS machines sells ITR replica pistons for the B20 in sizes of 84, 84.5, and 85mm which should net you in just under 11.5 compression with an oem head gasket and that b17 head, plus you'll be obd1 so the tuning options much more available but good luck with the car and it sounds like a fun project
