I thought it was the apocolypse of the internet. Or something like Chuck Norris' website roundhouse kicking every other website off the internet.

lol, no, nothing that cool. I honestly didn't even watch the whole video. Basically it just raises the importance of net neutrality. I hope everyone here keeps that in mind in the future when voting for anything related to the internet.

The grid will be up by 2012
Watching it now. Right off the bat, a girl with big 'ol boobies. Heck yes.

Yes it will. I'm sure alternatives will spring up, but for older people and those less tech savvy it's potentially very bad news.
And according to the Mayan calendar, the world ends on Dec 21, 2012 anyway. Kiss your OC-1024 direct to your brian implant byebye.
That'll suck if the world ends anytime soon.

The grid is a distributed computing project by CERN. Basically all of the computers that connect to the grid become a large single computer capable of processing hundreds or thousands of times more data than your single computer ever could. It's similar in nature to distributed computing like folding@home. It's being touted as the next big thing for data communication. I can see the power in it. It essentially gives anyone that needs it almost limitless computer power to solve problems, crunch data (break into the federal reserve).

Here you go Stu, we had a video about the grid on publicblend as well. http://www.publicblend.com/videos/13781/CERN-video-How-The-Grid-will-revolutionize-computing
Thanks, I'll watch it when I get home.

Yeah, the year 2000 problem is incredibly weaksauce compared to 2038, but it's still easily fixed.

Most computers keep track of the time by counting the number of seconds that have elapsed since 1970, and this number is used internally for a lot more than just reporting the date to the user. They usually use a signed 32-bit integer to do it, which means that it will overflow in 2038. After that happens, the clock value will be totally out of range (in more ways than one), so you'll see a lot of new software bugs pop up, as well as some things ceasing to function. The solution is pretty simple, but will require a lot of software to be updated. We still have 30 years and work is already being done to eliminate the problem, so it shouldn't matter by then.
