I am going to be buying a house in a few months out and I just got a chunk of change just laying around. I wont be out of my least for another 6-9 months and a friend suggested I put the cash away into a cd. Thoughts or other options?
I am relatively new to investing. But I really need to start. Right now all i do is do the max my company will match with my 401k.
CD rates now are similar to high-yield online savings accounts. you can get an account at E-Trade or any of the other high-yield places, like the one Mavrick posted about.
I would put your money in there, obviously neither will get you lots of money unless you have some thousands but atleast with the account you can get money out if/when you need it.
Whatever you do, don't move money around much in the last few months before you apply for a mortgage, they don't like that, and you'll have to trace your steps with them. If anyone is going to loan you or give you gift money personally for down/closing costs do it now if you can. If money shows up randomly a month before you apply they will make you show documentation from where it came from. They want to make sure it isn't an undocumented loan that plays into your income/debt.
Pull your credit report and scores soon and make sure they are correct and good before you start applying.
