View Full Version : Competition Engineering roll bar install this weekend...

I spent the weekend fabbing and welding in DCSportsciv 6 point roll bar for competition this year.
Didnt have time to resize, so click the thumbnails for a large size view.
The hoop bar was supposed to weld directly to the edge of a 6x6 plate by NHRA rules. I built a 3 sided box welded directly to the floor/side rocker/center rocker for higher strength and chassis rigidity. I also built a 2 sided "L" box to mount the front bars to that welds directly to the floor and side rockers as well. When the car is jacked up from any one of the lift points, it will now lift 3 of the 4 wheels. Future plans include two front "K" bars and windshield crossbrace as well as more front bracing when Chris goes fast enough. The center supports are also used as midship subframe connectors. Not necessary for the speeds the car reaches now but it was easier to put in now rather than later.

I believe the with the latest rules, they require a sepate bar that attaches to its own 6x6plate on the side rocker, and those go from the cage to that bar.
Pretty sure they cant go to the floor anymore.
Wont matter if its not a full cage, I supposed

That rule applies to "Cage" cars, not roll bar cars. Also the wording is very vague as well. It says it "MAY" be welded to a 6x6 plate but does not require it. I talked to an NHRA inspector Friday and gave him my plans and he said it will pass until the car goes 10.99.

Add new paragraph "D" bar installation for full bodied cars: For front wheel drive cars, with complete OEM floor (from the fire wall to the rear of the trunk) and rocker/sill boxes, the 1-1/4" x .058" CM (.118" MS) "D" bars (when required; i.e. when the main hoop is not welded to the frame) may be welded to a 1-5/8" x .083" CM (.118" MS) cross member welded to the rocker/sill box via conventional 6" x 6" x 1/8" thick plates. For rear wheel drive cars, with neither a frame nor sub-frame connectors, but with complete OEM floor (from the fire wall to the rear of the trunk; exception: the rear inner wheel wells may be tubbed with steel or aluminum.) and rocker/sill boxes, the 1-1/4” x .058 CM (.118” MS) "D” bars may be welded to conventional 6" x 6" x 1/8" plates attached to the drive shaft tunnel.”
Fitment looks to be pretty good, nice job.

Even though it was made for a civic, it took a lot of fitting and cutting. :D

If you buy a main hoop for a 79-93 Mustang It fits damn near perfect and the rest of the tubing is just straight dom alot cheaper then buying a complete kit and it does the same thing

This hoop did fit perfect. It is a Civic kit not a Mustang kit. To get the bars where I wanted them to abide by the rules and to be as strong as possible took time to cut/notch/trim. Other than that it fit fine.

Very nice.
so do you have a notcher now? plans for a bender?

werd, those kits are a waste of money.

No notcher. Probably not a bender anytime soon either. I would have to open another business building only cage bars to justify the cost and time requirements.
I just checked Summit racing, the 73 mustang kit adn the civic kit are the exact same price. If you buy the main hoop seperately and then just use straight tubing the price is maybe about $15 different. The side bars in the kit are bent out though to give more room for seats and elbows. I still think the kit is a very good value even with shipping.
I have the cheapie harbor freight notcher and have notch well over ends with it. Just sucks cuz it only does straight notches.

oh cool. That things pretty sweet. You dont see too many people running a non-vtec setup nowadays.
How long did it take you to get it comepletely welded in? Do they make them for 1g Talons as well?
HONDA GHANDI

I spend two days on it prepping, fitting and welding. I didnt see an eclipse/talon application but that doesnt mean they dont make it.

Wow, sounds pretty labor intensive, but worth it and necessary, of course.
Well, Im hoping to need one by the end of the season, or next year...but we'll see. looks good though man!

FYI...a good chop saw does great for notches. TIGing it is still possible as well without issue.

I use my chop say to get the angle, then my electric grinder to make the tube fit snug.
As far as using TIG to weld the bars in, that was a pure time/convenience thing for me. I dont have a hand control on my torch so trying to TIG this in with a foot pedal would have been a bitch. MIG is still perfectly legal on the MS bars so...

Yeah. I'm TIGing my buddies cage into his prelude and all he has is the foot pedal. He has to push the pedal as I weld yelling out "MORE" "LESS" "STOP" lol.
The finger tip control makes it so much easier for sure.

ROFL. That sounds like when I tried to learn to drive once when I was too short to hit the pedals. AHAHAHAH...
Try Tigging laying down underneath the car with the foot control. Will make you sore the next day lol.....i just miss my lift.

I'll one up ya ;)
I'm 6'2 and had to cram into the trunk to be able to weld under the rear shock tower cross bar. We have pics of this, but havn't gotten them up yet. I'll post them up for sure.

Ballpark of about $1500-$1800 when all is said and done. It also depends on what materials and process you want to use and if I have to work around interior or not.
