View Full Version : Head Gasket and Head bolts?

Alright so I popped my headgasket in my car today and have a few different questions. What are the chances of the head warping? When it popped I was at about 6000 rpm's and in 3rd gear. The temp guage went north in a hurry but I shut it off before it got too high, though I know it will continue to build heat after it's shut down. It started smoking white also, and it did quite a bit. I smelt coolant and know it's at least sucking that through the engine, So I'm also worried about my piston rings. Is there anything to test for before I start to pull it apart? I know that my compression numbers are going to be screwy cause of the headgasket being not so in tact. The only enjoyment I got out of this was how quick it was for about six miles. So I want to know which head gasket to use Oem best, and which arp's should I go with? Could someone find a part number to these or tell me where I could find some?

Before the Carnage!

Get an OEM head gasket and ARP's. Good to go! This ZC moves!

Yeah it moved a lot slower than I wanted to on the way back

Another shitty phone pic, broken down on the off ramp

How much boost and what compression? Probably just lifted the head.

10 lbs, and I believe a zc has a compression ratio of 9.3:1. Any tests I can do to see if the rings are bad?

I hope the head just lifted. I don't wanna have to put rings in it.

pop it open and look. Bad rings should show some discoloration in select parts of the cyl. wall. I'll bet though that you will see the gasket is damaged between two cyl.

Or with the head off, press on the top of the pistons and try to wiggle them in any
direction, any freeplay is a sign of bad rings

That is not a sign of anything. Brand new pistons/rings in a cylinder honed perfectly will still have movement in all side and fore/aft directions. The rings dont tend to be destroyed after a couple of seconds of coolant flushing. It takes a bit longer than that. Unless of course the piston rings were already on the verge of failure anyway. The only way to tell if they have been damaged is to inpsect the cyl wall closely for damage, scoring, or glazing. If any of these conditions exist (basically anything other than a perfect hone mark) the rings will need to be removed and inspected/replaced.

Awesome Ghandi you have the part number for arp's for a single cam zc? I believe it is the same casting as the pm6.

Awesome Ghandi also if it helps it did not smoke out of the breather hole in the valve cover one bit.

It usually wont with a blown headgasket unless it has been bad for a long time and has failed in two directions. Coolant into cylinder, compression into crankcase.

Time for a rebuild. i think the rings should be fine. Things i would do is check the head, and block to make sure that there not warped. Then if thats all good get an oem head gasket, and some arp's.

On a side note. mx-6er Whats ur setup and tuning needs? Last time i saw ur car u were na. And an other thing do u know anyone selling some LS mesh wheels?

I run OEM head gasket with Golden Eagle head studs. Made 330 horse just fine. New setup is exactly the same and should make 500ish.

Yeah I'm going to get a straight edge and a feeler guage to see what shape the two are in. I do not know anyone with any ls mesh wheels.

M@-Know anyone in town with either golden eagle or arp headstuds in stock?

I think both of those parts you have to special order through a shop. Although, sometimes if a part is in high demand shops will cary a set or two in house.

You might wanna check ImportSports Paul. They might have some in house cause I know Jesse made them order some for his motor a couple weeks ago.

Ehhhhh. You might. The Cylinder walls look kinda rough. A hone might be enough, but you should probably just get it bored and honed just to be safe.

Hmmm, I think Tobi or Moe should have them in stock. (TC's or Speed Image)

I say take the block for a quick hone to be safe. Should be about $50 if that. Take it to Gunn Automotive on about 1st and Federal.

Thanks M@ I have a couple of good hook-ups so I'm sure the hone will be free, I also get a pretty bad ass discount out at Fischer too so I think I'll be taking a trip that way tomorrow.

I'd get the block re-decked while you're at it if I were you. Wouldn't hurt to do the head, too.. but you'll have to tear the head down to do that.
