My car does this only in the mornings when cold. I start it to let it warm up and the RPM gauge is almost at Zero, I rev it up to at least 2000 but it reads 100. Basically its 2000 rpms off till it warms up. Vtec is at 6400 instead of 4400. Once its warm its totally fine. The dizzy is with in a year old and was brand new. Maybe dash? Anyone else ever have this problem?
TIA

When those older Tachs get tired they become very innaccurate. They are basically 5 or 6 copper windings that energize at different intensities pulling on the magnetic steel needle in the tach. When one of the windings go bad it causes the needle to read off + or - a certain amount. I would try a new tach or cluster assembly in the same conditions and see if it fixes the problem. If not it has to be in the ignition system itself but my money is on the gauge.

The cluster has 180,000 miles so that is what i'll check into later. Whens its cold and the tach is off, when you rev it up it goes up way fast but about 6000 rpm it reads normal.

And that is sick Carl, maybe ill keep an eye for a 99 SI one to throw in there.

dont you have to recal the tach after replacement? maybe this is only on the newer clusters

I know in DAs the tach will just work. But do not take the needle out, or that gauge is fucked. Though I do believe you can take out the needles in efs, I wanted to get those cool red ones when I had an ef.

When you say Vtec is at 6400 instead of 4400, do you mean that it's literally kicking in 2000 RPM's late when you drive it? If so, than that is something more than just a bad gauge.

no its kicking in at 4400, but is reading 6400, 2000 rpm off. gradually getting worse.

Oh, got'ch ya. Yeah, that just sounds like a problem with the gauge. The motor is reading the information right, from what I've read, It's just the gauge is all messed up. I would put money on it that it's just the gauge. Replace it and you should be fine.

Happened too me as well, the lil wheel that the needle attaches too was bad so the needle would stick and then catch back up, sounds a lil similar but your is off so jus get a new cluster

Sometimes shit just goes bad ya know. Every once in a while you get the bad item in the bunch. I would put my money on the gauge.

Well turns out my Battery in the back tipped over, Drained acid too. Upon all the clean up and what not it does work just fine. Guess ti was shorting somewhere with the battery on its side! lol
