View Full Version : Key broke off in ignition switch.. ideas?
This happened on the Talon a while back.. about 1/4" of the key's tip broke off in the ignition switch a while back and I haven't figured out a way to get it out yet. I tried putting a dab of super glue to the end of a length of metal wire, sticking it in, and letting it dry.. no luck. Any other suggestions? I'm stumped on this one. lol.
I have no clue how it even happened. I just noticed it one night, and was like wtf mate? How does that honestly even happen? lol. It broke to where I can still put the key in and start it, just can't figure out how to remove the piece.

Replace the ignition
Geeee, ya think? Um, or not. I'd rather not have to deal with go between two different keys all the time.

you might want to try to all State Wide Lock and Key. we have had to call them out when someone broke off a key in our door at the office. granted your problem is a little different, you might want to try

Check out April’s issue of Popular Science. They show how to torpedo a key out of a lock. I didn’t read the whole article so I am unsure how in-depth the article is.

The metal fatigued is what happened. Except for some steels and titanium all metals will break after enough cycles of stress, even if its below the yield stress of the metal.
The best way to get it out is to remove the lock cylinder. And having separate keys for your locks and your starter isn't that hard. I've had to do it for a few years on my Storm because the lock cylinder on my car froze up.
Oh, really? I hadn't figured that out.......
........anyways.
I was mainly wondering how it managed to break off inside of the ignition hole at the tip, versus say... the part your fingers hold onto. It was just a little odd.

The tip doesn't see much stress since its supported by the cylinder. The portion that sticks out between the cylinder and where the plastic is molded on sees the highest torsion.
Hence why it was odd that it broke at the tip.

check ebay, my lady had her purse stolen and they got her keys, we got 2 door tumblers, 2 keys, and ignition tumbler for 45$ shipped, kinda a PITA to change but cost effective
Yeah, I'm sure I can go that route, too. I'll see if I can remove the tumbler this weekend and try to get the broken piece out first. Thanks though, guys.

have you tried calling a locksmith yet? City lock in boulder rekeys lock cyls for us all the time, so I'd assume he could eather get your "tip" out, or rekey the new ign cyl to your old key...just a thought...
EDIT: he rekeys them not on the car for us...and its like 65 bucks

just call a few locksmiths and see what they can do. its worth a try. better than replacing the thing

M@ do the super glue trick, but use the other portion of the key to do it. The reason the wire didn't work is because the tumblers are trapping the busted portion. You have to use the other part of the key to get the tumblers up.

Martians suggestion makes the most sense. If you have the rest of the key removing the cylinder may make it easier to remove as well(but you will need the rest of the key to do that, if you want to re-use the cylinder again anyway).
I have the rest of the key, and I already tried his method.... didn't work though.
