I don't know if anyone will know the answer to this question but here it goes. My Dad has heard stories of people filtering their old synthetic motor oil and reusing it. So we were wondering if that is ok to do? I'm sure there are plenty of ways to get it clean but what about the viscosity?

Can dirty oil be filtered and resused or is it a bad idea?

Let me know what you guys think.

Bad idea. The oil itself is fine, that's why you can reuse it. Its the detergents and suspension agents that need to be replaced.

Agreed. The natural lubricating properties of the oil break down with temperature and shock. The oil actually gets beat up and breaks down over time. I realize synthetic oil can get expensive, but even if its in question, why would you risk blowing up an engine so you could save a few bucks on filtering your oil... (would it really be saving money if you have to buy the filters?)

But don't listen to me, try it, and see what happens :)
