OKay well 95 Mitsu Galant ES. And I want to make sure ignition timing is correct before I take it back to get emissions. Really I'm looking for it to be done Without being charged a full hours labor. The upper timing cover is off already BTW.
Thanks in Advance.

sorry i just read your other post.. why are you adjusting timing?? to fix the high nox? if so.. this will not fix your nox issue

As jackmode stated, NOX is a result of cylinder temperatures being too high. If timing is overadvanced to the point of detonation, it will DEFINATELY raise cylinder temperatures (NOX). Setting the engines timing to spec will (theoretically anyway) cut back on detonation, therefore lowering NOX counts.

Only NASA has the technology and capabilities to do such a thing.

It's the answer to everything

you think the timing randomly set itself to advanced, without him noticing any sort of knock4.0 is high for nox in the first place.. the fact that he has surpassed that limit is even more worrysome.. my recommendation is to bring it to a mechanic and let them do their job, if you cannot figure the timing out (no offense intended) you may not be able to figure out the reasoning behind the nox failure. in some cases it will go far beyond the timing issue you believe youre having. i believe it is.
i mean no offense. but vacuum leaks or an egr failure is much more of a possibility

Word thanks, I can actually figure the timing out(and I did). I was just unclear on the marks. I am just real used to Hondas. This is in fact the first mitsu I have ever worked on.

If the timing has never been checked on the car, there is a VERY big possibility that its advanced too far. Who knows what has been done in the past??
If the engines timing is WAY overadvanced causing loads of detonation (especially if the engine is extremely carboned up, which, lets face it, tends to happen when the previous owner doesnt take care of their vehicle) NOX numbers can and will be extremely high. Have you never seen anything like this before?? Do you honestly believe its not something worth checking? Do you honestly believe detonation WILL NOT raise NOX readings??
Checking the timing advance, and trying a few of the previously suggested "easier" recommendations could save him money, and the headache of taking it to some shop that wants to throw parts at it...
No offense intended by any means, of course. The recommendations I gave him on certain items to check are based off of my own personal experiences in the feild. Should what Ive suggested not fix the issues, or help, then yea, itd be a good idea to take it somewhere. But as a simple starting point, with simple items to check, Id say its a fairly decent, simple diag. process.
BTW, any word on the timing situation, Jackmode?

no i agree with you absolutely, i have seen far more occasions where it has nothing to do with timing at all of course advanced timing would cause this as well so i wont argue your point. just keep us tuned in jackmode. if its not timing, i can help you diag from there

Well she passed emissions, but barely. I have a feeling I have the retarded timing and Bg44k to thank for that. Not to mention she took a highway trip right before the test this time. I guess pulling out that egr and cleaning might have helped too. I don't know.
She passed nox with 3, when the max is 4. Her HCS passed at 1.6 when her max is 2. WOuld a faulty cat possible be causing so much trouble? I do want to get this fixed, just hard times financially.
