It a 96 eclipse spyder gs started when I notice the car just rev when you have it in drive. Mostly when it cold in the morning and when you let go off the gas pedal. Now you could run it in any gear and it wouldn't go. I'm sure it the torque converter.

Last time I check the fluid was all black and burn. So then I drain the plug/screw and then refill it. Should I drain it then remove the transmission pan and replace the filter this time.

it may be to far gone......good luck. You can try changing the fluid but if it does not help car-part.com do a nation wide search for another trans, you may find a really good price other than here. If changing the fluid helps good, just dont get your hopes up.

if your guna pull the pan than you might as well. but you have to check the fluid level while its runnung and in park just like frank said. make sure its at the low mark while the tranny is still a little cold. than go drive it around for a few minuts to let the trans get to normal operating temp than ckeck the fluid again, in park while idling. when the trans is warm, the fluid should be at "hot" on the dipstick. and make sure you put the correct fluid in too.

oh- dont bother with the filter if you have not yet pulled the pan, just see if the fluid helps. If it does help changing the filter is always a good thing.

what were you doing with your trans to start this? you werent revving it in neutral then throwing it into drive were ya?

also did it jerk a lot when it was trying to get in the gear or just rev?

dropping the pan is the easiest way to tell whats wrong with your trans, there should be a magnet to hold any metallic material and every other non magnetic material will be everywhere else, which says what is worn/wearing out in your transmission.

now if you drop it and black shit is everywhere coming from your trans working perfectly then either you or someone else revved it in neutral and dropped it into drive and there goes all of your gears and clutch packs and its obviously seized.

doublechecked materials

steel - magnetic = bearing gear and clutch plate
bronze - non magnetic = bushing wear

I have people saying it the torque converter and the bad new is I can't drive it. You could start it up and run it in drive or any other gears and it won't go. No I never rev it in Neutral and then throw it into Drive knowing that it a piece of shit to fix. It jerk alot when it in Drive and normally it will go through 1st gear fine but 2nd and 3rd that when it start jerking and you could rev it all the way until you let go of the gas pedal.
