well im in the market for an all wheel drive power house(EVO or STi)
and what i was considering an 05 STi or an EVO(8or9).
my issue right now is i dont know which one to choose. i know both are good cars. my plans for either of the cars would be full exhaust (carbon ti, dp, etc etc.), gt35r and all components that go along with it to make it run well.
i would appreciate any feed back that you guys give me. thanks

If you like the smell of clutch get an evo. I hear those things don't weart wear well. On the other hand, I see 5 sti's on the way to the store to get a candybar and no evos.

go with the evo. responds really with mods. true the clutches in stock dsm's suck but theyre easy to change so not a big deal.

Ive driven both, and I have to say the STI is way more fun. The STI's handle way better (IMO) and I couldnt bring myself to spend close to 30k (or more) on a glorified 4 door DSM.
The clutches on EVO's are a weak link, and the 8's seem to be a little more tempermental than the 9's. Not to mention, it may prove somewhat difficult to find a 8 that hasnt been beat on its whole life. (same for STI's there too)
Either one has their pro's and cons, but if it were my money, it would be going toward the STI.

hmmm. i also have heard the clutch is the weak spot. but my cousin who has an evo7 told me the clutch and everything is fine as long as u dont drive it like a r-tard, launching it at 5-6k everyday.

Eh, yea to a point. 8's are especially bad. If your starting out on a big enough hill you'll smell clutch

Ive always liked the looks of the STi quite a bit more. Id have to say id wrather own a WRX than an Evo. I just dont like them that much (looks and i have never liked the 4g63), and if i wanted a 4dr Eclipse, id find a Gallant VR4 and save quite a bit of money, and you sure as hell dont see those everyday.

I put AWD in my geo, IMO that's the only way to go.

Power wise, the STI has more potential, and it would be my preference for that and other reasons. I don't particularly like the Evo, but I have to say that it does offer more bang-for-the-buck and can hold it's own on the road course.

...You're gonna be hearing a LOT of back and forth EVO/STI praises man, be prepared! Haha
Im a fan of the 4G63, personally. EVO's and STI's are both too expensive for my blood...but Id still get an STI over an EVO. Like I said, they just seem like more fun to me.

More potential? How many subbies out there are actually putting down big numbers and low ets? Very few.
Evo's respond better to mods. They have a much larger stock turbo then the STI.
The STI's bigger engine is nice for daily driving.

ok so it seems like you guys have helped me decided that an evo is where i should be leaning. so my question is now 8 or 9? and does mivec really make that much of a difference?

If youy have the cash, a 9 MR. If you are low, a 8 RS. If you get an 8, get the 5 speed. I hear the 6 boxes don't hold up well.

No, thats because he is the only suby to have done anything in Colorado.

Yes, Mivec will do about 30 more whp mod per mod.

If mild mods and daily driving are what you plan on doing, go with the STI.
If you want to eventually smack C6's in their ear holes, get an Evo. Who cares if the clutches are weak, thats one of the first things I would replace anyway.

Definately a 9. Hands down. They have the MIVEC and mitsu also got rid of the chinsy plastic BOV for the 9's. Throw an intake and a turboback and you'll have a fun car (that smells like clutch...:)) Haha

In response to the Clutches in the Evo, a friend of mine practically learned to drive stick in his Evo and his clutch is still as good as if it were fresh of the lot.
It's a tough call between an STi and an Evo, I would personally pick an Evo due to the fact that it is a normal Inline-4 and the upgrade potential is great.
I have almost none if not very little experiance working on Boxer motors which is my main reason for staying away from STi's. Also, I think I heard somewhere you cant get intake manifolds or tuned cams for STi's due to the boxer motor.
As for handling, both the STi and Evo come factory stock with brembo brakes and I'm not sure but I know the evo comes with Bilstien springs. I'm not sure for the Evo.
And advantage the STi is gonna have is it's power control technology, how I've heard it works is like this, say you're on a dirt road and the computer detects 3 wheels are spinning, it'll transfer power to the wheel that has traction.
As for the Difference between the Evo 8 and Evo 9, as far as I know, it's a different wing, different front bumper, different tail lights, and vinyl (maybe leather) Recaro seats vs. Fabric. Besides that I'm pretty sure it's the same 4G63T engine.
oh yea..and the main difference...about $5-6K more

Read this quote for the differences Nightcat. They look alike, but seems people in the know (hrc knows) say theres a lil more than just vinyl, wing, fascia and light differences.

I'm sure there are a few more differences than I know for sure, however for the price tag, are the little differences worth the extra several thousand dollars.
As for the BOV, I wouldn't know cause my friend's car is..heh..lets say "modified" and I dont recall when it was stock. He has an APS Recirculation Valve in there right now.
As for the MIVEC, I'm pretty sure EVO8 has it aswell. yet, also might be due to the car I'm using as a comparison isn't stock.

Yeah I know whos car. :)
Also keep in mind that 8's are older than 9's, which might be where the price comes from among other things. A 2007 is just worth more than a comparable 2004.

lol, the APS recirculation give away it was Jon's car? lol
well, I was primarily comparing his car to Elvis's Evo 9.
They're both modified, both very similar, hell, even the same freakin color. and the I've seen the two parked right next to each other at GW. and the only differences i've noticed are what I've said. I dont know the capabilities of Elvis's Evo 9, however I'm pretty familair with Jon's Evo 8.

yea i love the boxer motor sound as well. but it seems like im getting the evo 8 due to 1. my budget 2. its an inline 4 (easier to work on than a flat 4) 3. mod friendly

...Jus to clarify, 8's did NOT come with MIVEC, 9's only at this point. Also, boxer motors have just the same amount of potential as any other. The EJ25 has a SLEW of aftermarket support behind it. EVERYTHING from built longblock assemblies, sheetmetal INTAKE MANIFOLDS, turbo upgrades, CAMS etc. Anyone heard of COBB tuning??
STI's DO have potential, they just wont be as easy to work on, and a little heavier on the pocketbook when it comes upgrade time.(and EVO's, by the way, arent much of a picnic either...) They make bolt on turbo kits that can boost a stock EJ25 to nearly 450hp at the wheels with a proper tune. The potential is there, it just comes down to the individual and what they're willing to do.

02-08-2008, 09:17 AM
i know that the evo 9 is the only one that has mivec. but i also know that u can get a garret gt35r rotated kit for the ej25 and that will place it at 450-70 on pump gas. i know both cars have wonderful potential but the if the i run into engine problems the 4g63 would be easier to work on than the ej25

The STI's bigger engine is nice for daily driving.
You said it yourself... "The STI's bigger engine". If you want to talk about how far you can go (ie potential), 2.5L > 2.0L, and stock turbos are a completely irrelevant argument. And in my own experience, I've always been far more impressed with the power of modified STI's than Evo's.

i would also agree the sti does have more potential, but as a broke college student i dont have that kind of change to bring out that potential. plus im not looking to surpass 500awhp anyways.
and the stock turbo is irrelevant since im planning to take it out anyways
