Well I'm currently looking into getting a new ride and I've been thinking about getting an MKIII VW Golf or Jetta. Honestly, I've looked around vwvortex, but I don't know much about the cars. I've owned 5 Hondas and love them to death, but I'm thinking of switching it up a bit. Anybody have any personal experiences with these cars before I waste time going to look at em (reliability, build quality, ease of maintenance, etc.)?

I do know from this board and others that Jettas do have alot of issues with them and my frined's VR6 was in the shop 5 times before 30k miles for ticky tack crap.

Yeah the more I read about them, they sound like a pain in the ass.

Our neighbors across the parking lot (RS Motorsports) specialize in VW/Audi so if you want some advice on what years/makes are better than others, I would talk to Joel over there (303) 432-8989.

Just go drive one, there high maintenance but most good things in life are..
Mine went on a 7k mile road trip this summer very heavily modified, other than a loose wire and an insane boost spike (30psi) it made it just fine w/no problems..

I had a friend with a 99 1.8t and that thing was nothing but problems. They are fun to drive when they are running good.

MKIII's have issues with the power windows. They all seem to have electrical issues.
My cruise died in my Jetta, the fan control unit caught on fire once.
Other then that, my 1994 Jetta has 280k miles on the odometer :D

If all the sensors are working properly the car runs like a top, when sensors start failing or getting false readings it goes into a retard mode which seemingly kills off the remaining sensors/electronics at an accelerated rate.. Most common problems are MAF/O2s/Coil packs/vac leaks/relays and hidden fuses. Find a person w/a VAG-COM and you'll be fine tho as the onboard diagnostics is pretty damn good.
Mechanically it seems inner axle CV and 2nd gear syncros are the only things people regularly have problems with, but if its bone stock and those fail then your beating the fuck out of your car plain and simple.. which alot of people do
If your mechanically inclined they are easy to work on, sometimes its kinda wierd how VW does things so if your used to hondas its going to seem needlessly complicated in some points and others crazy simple, thats just German engineering for ya.
