Got a PS3 for X-mas and was looking for some free movie deals that I see everywhere and found this looks to be the best one. 5 free select movies via mail good from 10/01/07 to 01/31/08.

I just can't get over how slow most blueray drives are. My dad bought one and it literally takes 5+ minutes from power up before you have the movie on the screen. On top of that the scene selections on every movie are so slow they are unusable. My HD dvd drive is just as fast a s a regular dvd drive.

What HD player do you have?

I have a Toshiba A3 and it takes about 3 minutes to load and get ready to start a movie. Other then that I have no complaints with it

I have the one for the xbox 360. Works flawlessly, and loads as fast as a regular dvd.

I have both well I have the ToshibaA3 and a PS3, I like the selection of the HD I cant really see the difference in speed, lines of res etc. the only thing I notice that the Blu-Ray has more of is the extra features crap which I dont watch anyway. HD movies also seem to be cheaper than the Blu-Ray.

But overall I am happy with the PS3 it comes with alot more features than the 360 that I have that and I didnt have to spend an extra $100 to get wireless. Gawd I was pissed when I hooked up my Wii to find out it came with WiFi and my 360 didnt so mad at my 360 right now lol!

No it isn't. It runs at 1080i or 1080p http://hardware.teamxbox.com/reviews/xbox-360/68/Xbox-360-HD-DVD-Player/p2/

All of my movies play at a native 1080i on my tv since it doesn't support 1080p.

well that sucks, is this the same one that is usually 299? if it is then the guy at best buy screwd me up cause he said that it would only make sense to get it if i had a 720 tv and that if i wanted the 1080 one it be another 100 bucks...thats when i decided to just buy a ps3.

Ya, its normally $299 and its on sale now at Best Buy for $199. I bought it in November, when they had the 5 mail ins, 2 in box, and 3 instant promotion. And they had low price till mid Feb so I went in last inght and they gave me my $ back.

You have to have an HDMI connection for the 1080 to work, and the 1080p from every source I have read is more of a "gimmick" over the 1080i, no one will be able to tell the difference between the two.

Both formats will support porn.

All HD players will get faster and more efficient as the technology gets better but Blu-ray discs are capable of handling more information and that may be the deciding factor in the years to come but it's a watch and wait situation.

I personally don't care as I'm happy with my upconverting DVD recorder and will be for a few years to come and by then the war should be decided by then and players and movies will be what players and movies cost now.

Brian

IMO hd dvd and blue-ray are crap. Flash media, solid state drives, and video over the net are the technologies they should really focus on.

You can do 1080i fine over component cables. You can even do 1080p over component or vga if your tv supports it. If your tv doesn't support that then you need hdmi to do 1080p, but 1080i is always doable over component cables (at least on every device i've ever seen)

Yeah but it doesnt look as good...guaranteed.... Ive hooked my PS3 up with both!

Brian
12-28-2007, 10:10 AM
If you have good quality component cables you would have a VERY difficult time telling the difference. That wasn't the point though. I was simply stating that there is no need for hdmi to do 1080 signals. SOme older hdtv's didn't come with hdmi inputs, but they are still more than capable of displaying a 1080i signal over component.

Conrad

signal != picture quality.

Here on peterson AFB they have exact matching blue ray players, same sony bravia tv one with monster gold plated components and one hdmi...

Its a night and day difference.

FWIW I chose HDMI for both my HD cable box and my non-HD DVD player. Simply for convenience, and once I get off my butt and decide which high def DVD player to buy, I'll be set.

Got both the ToshibaA3 and the PS3 through HDMI on 1080p my cable HD is through component and I can barely see the difference on some PPV HD programing. I am mad that the PS3 will not allow me to choose both optical and HDMI as an audio output!

YOu have better eyes than me then. I've seen side by side comparisons on several tv's and it's very hard to tell the difference. Given that, like I said above, you should use hdmi if you have it, but many hdtv's do not, so using high quality component cables makes a lot of sense.

well if you dont have hdmi its the only sense....

Eitherway I was with you till I saw the exact same player same tv same movie playing simultaneously, to tell the difference

Got a link, what I did was hook the AV audio to the TV so I dont have to use the optical all the time for games. But I would rather use the one HDMI for the TV audio and the Optical for the Surround sound it gets too loud just to play a game when the kiddo is in bed.

I am sure that there will be an external Blu-ray for the X-box in the future. Its the begining of the end for HD-DVD its only a matter of time before the other firms move over as well. Sux though I do own both but I did enjoy the speed and reliability of the HD slightly more.

dont be so sure... being that xbox is in direct competition with ps3 I dont think sony will allow bill gates to get drives for his machines..

Well at least if I was sony I would tell Microsoft to smile like a bagel...

This will help speed up development of the format as a whole;this is a good thing to have a decided winner except fot those that shelled out $300 for a HD player when in the next month they'll be worth about $50.:D

I dont think that microsoft will put out an external player but I am sure a third party company will see the market and get on it LG, Funai, Pelican etc. I think a company somewhere will seek for a new media player for the X-box I doubt no one will get on it.

I will disagree with this, i feel that they will not put out a new xbox just because it doesnt have blu ray- xbox is a gamers console and thats what it is for.

Conrad
01-08-2008, 12:07 PM
Perhaps... but PS3 is the same "its a gamers console" and its been one longer than xbox. And now has the ability to make way bigger games due to the fact it can use blu-ray disks.

Notice I said bigger... not better.. because thats opinion. But most games are avail for both.

I agree with you on that. So far any game that is both platforms I buy for the 360 but most of my media goes through my PS3. I just hope a company out there sees the dismanteling of HD-DVD and gets on a external BR player for the 360 owners that would like to utilize that aspect ASAP.
