Ok, this isn't exactly HAI news, but if it's true, than it's news fo sure.

Performance-oriented R32 Golf is U.S.-bound, Volkswagen chief says
Volkswagen chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder confirmed to AutoWeek the performance-oriented R32 Golf is indeed coming to the U.S. market. We last reported a decision on whether to sell the car stateside was dependent on whether it could meet U.S. crash standards.
Apparently, the car passed the tests because now Pischetsrieder is saying the R32 will arrive within the next year as a 2004 model.

The R32’s launch date depends upon how quickly the car can be adapted to meet U.S. certification standards, he says.

Expect 5000 to 10,000 R32s priced somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000 to be earmarked for the United States, although Pischetsrieder left the door open for more if demand exists. Technical changes from the 237-hp European R32 will be limited only to those required under U.S. standards.

If anyone doesn't know what the R32 is, here ya go

Very nice, but 35k for a golf is a bit steep.

For the $$$ I'd rather have the Mitsu EVO but then again I might be biased a bit. ;) The EVO,since it is turboed, will be fairly easy to extract extra ponies for a small investment.

damn, so many sexy cars coming out..... evo, and wrx sti, and rx-8.... man i need to start saving money

exciv2000

RX-8 isn't boosted. EVO will eat the very unsexy STI. Evo's need a styling change tho, cause the current ones are too boxy and too much dash on the inside.

I have seen a newly designed front end for the WRX and it does look way better but who knows when it will make it's way stateside.

from what Ive heard it was gonna be between $25,000 and $30,000. not 35. which seems strange since jetta glx's sell for 27. anyways it should be pretty sweet. 3.2 l (i think) 240 hp +awd. and it has sweet seats and many other goodies. It will be a nice alternative to the evo or wrx

I'd get one for sure, V6 plus AWD, if you got enough for the car, you have enough for a turbo in that bitch. Which would murder quite a few!

I dont think VW is thinking correctly. The 337 is already here, do we really need another GTI?? HELL NO! We need a god damn Jetta 4mo turbo!

There was a statement somewhere on the VW forums that VW might just ditch the R32 and make the R33, which in turn is a A5/mk5 Jetta with a S4 drivetrain. 2dr sport compacts are gettin' old... we need more super sedans :D

Just the fact that their offering a 6 cylinder motor with AWD is pretty sweet. There is so much oppurtunity to make that car quicker than hell. Also in such a small package, RIGHT ON.

The only shitty thing is, about the same time that I'll be able to get a loan for my next car, I'll have the options of The R32, STi WRX, and the Evo 7!!!!

Talonstylz

6 Cylinder w/AWD Put a Turbo on it and Think Lightweight, better handling 3000GT VR4. VR4s Haul ass and they weigh a lot, R32 is light and you can surely crank out near the same power as a VR4 with a Turbo and the right stuff. This car is a Stang Killer out of the box, Turbo = Saleen What?

from one of the mags i was reading here not to long ago i read that the new sti is gona b 320hp now to compete with the lancer.... so we should c that pretty soon.. it was automobile, road and track, or motor trend.. cant remember which one... so it may not be such a slouch up against the lancer now after all....'burnout:

as the owner of one (a Golf, not the R32) I prefer a smaller engine with as much potential. I like the R32, but if you thought the VR6 was front heavy (and I do think it is), this one will be awful. the current VR6 is 2.8L and the R32 is 3.2L. the benefit of the R32 is that it brings 4motion to the States and thus opens the market for 4 motion GTIs, Golfs and Jettas. what I would like to see is an R32 with a 1.8T APR stage 3. or ATP stage 2. we are talking approx 250 whp on 93 octane with 4motion. racetrack, here I come :)

exciv2000

For around 30K, the R32 aint worth the price.

Brian
11-13-2002, 02:54 PM
Turbo VR6's are fast as hell, I can only imagine an AWD version running around. I do agree that this will open up the market for other AWD golf's, and GTI's. The day an AWD 1.8t is offered is the day I trade my car in. I sure hope VW does it, but it seems that they like to pair the V6 with AWD here in the states. The R32 and the Passat both have the v6 with AWD.

In germany they all ready have the AWD in every thing over there as an opt

Yeah I know, I just don't know that they would offer AWD as an option here for 1.8t's

the automarket here sux! :) there is no justifiable demand for 4motion on these small cars. the Passat, yes, but the Golf/Jetta? no, IMO.

I highly doubt it. Have you seen the Dahlback? It's got stickers, widebody, a wing and everything.

And pushes 900hp

I found a video of it on the net somewhere, if I can find it I'll try to put it up. :D

Mr nolimitsoldier has most of his story wrong.
firstly the car has 241bhp as standard, basic pricein Germany at the moment without extras is €31995,00 with full options,€38400,00(i know because that is what mine cost)
trust me, this car is a beast. and for future fast toys from Germany, look out for the polo R series. with 170bhp, with such a light car, that is fun.

trust me, I own one, it is well worth the price, and if you guys get them in the states for that money, buy all you can, I bought mine here in Germany last November, fully loaded cost €38400,00, do the maths, the euro is stronger than the dollar , the over $40,000 at todays rate. and to be honest, it beats the hell out of BMW M3's and M5's, such a great sound and goes like shit off a shovel.

The estimated price for the US is around $27,000 base. Still way more than the WRX and other cars in that class, but I think it'll be worth the money. VW's are awesome cars, and are more refined and luxurious than any other cars for the price. That's my opinion at least. That's why I own one :) The R32's gonna be a beast.

How long have you had your R32? Because not only is this post 5 months old, but since the car is not over here as of yet, he obviously got the info from some other source than himself. While I appreciate you trying to be an effective and valuable member, you'll need to be more informative than you are before you can come in here acting like a jackass.

How much more informative would you like, and sorry if the jackass side comes out, but I thought that some info on the price comparison might show that in the states you are getting a good deal?? or not, it would seem that the only answers written back are more along the lines of taking the piss rather than asking serious questions, all except one guy who seems to understand that the car may infact be a good buy, rather than what the general opinion is of an expensive golf.
I was try to at least shed some light on the fact that the car really is worth that amount, it cannot be compared to any other Golf, and certainly not to any other car within the price range.
I have had my R32 since Nov, and the more miles I put on it the better it gets, at first it is fairly juicey, it will pass pretty much everything except a petrol station, the options on Stereos systems are pretty good(for VW) I went for the Bose digital sound system with colour navigation, the seats hold you nicely, but hard for women in short skirts to get out(but who cares abut that) for the first couple of thousand miles it used alot of oit, according to VW that is normal, but the price of oil for it is no where near normal, the car is also better to drive with the traction control turned off, so much power goes through the wheels that it is hard to pull away fast with it turn on, the damn car just keeps putting the brakes on,
If you have any serious questions, by all means ask, rather than the comments rec'd yesterday, and the reason for the late addition, is because I did not even know of the site until yesterday.

har har, good one. But you and your car look like shit to me. get your eyes checked. It doesn't matter what car I drive, I can still make that comment. There's a thing over here called free speech, it must suck that you don't have that. If you come on here acting like you know everything there is to know about VW, you're going to get flak... deal with it. I meant it as sort of a joke but obviously you got all butt hurt about it didn't you. And just for the record, there is always someone faster, even in a honda, and you need to deal with that too, whether it's on a race track, 1/4 mile track, or past 190 MPH on the highway.

I am not in the least upset by what you said, and since when did English People not have free speech, the mere fact that I live in Germany does not take away my right of say., and as you have no idea what I look like and if you have ever seen what a R32 looks like up close, not just a picture, then how can you justify what you said, I think you can't, so far all I have heard is what I can and can't say on this site, sorry, but who made you the fucking webmaster and died, you said it earlier, "Free Speech".
I also know that there is always someone faster, but I think the fact is in your case it is me, and you should live with that, aside from the fact I can do whatever speed I wish legally. and as I wasn't the one who started the slagging off, I suggest you live with a bit of flak about the piece of shit you drive and be prepared for more until you have sold it.
And no, I do not know only about VW's, I also own a 1989 Porsche 911, Saab Viggen, just sold my Audi TT Quattro, and own a Kawazaki ZX7R, amoung a long list of BMW's and so on.
So sonny, what would you like to know about cars, as owning what you do, it seems you are in need of an education. just for your info, fast and furious was just a film, and I bet you own a copy, don't you, come on, you can tell us. :p

No problem, why did you just not ask why I revived the thread.
the reason is, you guys still don't have the car yet, I had just seen the site and thought I might contribute as I own one, did not realise that other certain people here own the site and free speech is just for them, aside from which, if by any chance someone looking at this wanted to buy a R32 when they come out no one who has written into this thread has any first hand knowledge, I did not know the thread was lost.
and normally I do not go attacking people via internet, but if as your answers said, you don't give a fuck, why answer in the first place. anyway, have a nice evening.

I usually wouldn't but I have to step in to defend Exciv2000 here. No, he doesn't have a copy of F&F. In fact, he is the most verbally anti-rice on the whole site. He is far from a kid, and is in fact very knowledgable when it comes to cars. However, I think that he got defensive a little too early in the conversation. He saw your post as an attack on the thread starter. In real life he is not a prick and knows his fair share about what he is talking about. Thanks for all the information, you will probably be a good addition to this site.

Fine, thanks, I can live with that, at the end of the day(it gets dark) none of us have the best cars in the world, but we all like them, otherwise we would not be doing this. and you were right, my comments were not attacks, just merely wanting to straighten the facts, still, I think it's bloody unfair that you guys get the car cheaper than we do, and I'm only a couple of hundred miles from where they make the damn thing.

I'm not impressed with your list of cars, nor your ability to speed legally. I can justify the R32 looking like shit because I have that right. So what? It's pretty obvious my opinions do something to you otherwise you wouldn't be defending your position. You wouldn't be calling my car a piece of shit. You don't know a thing about it. Who's to say you are faster? Just because it's a honda? I'm not the one in need of an education here.
