Right now I am still a student in college and currently I am unemployed. I was wondering if anyone who owns a paint shop would allow me to just watch and learn for one or two days how to properly paint a car? I dont want any money and I dont really care for hands on learning, so all I would do is stand and watch, let me know if anyone would want to help me out.
Thanks,
Stevn

if you're not willing to get hands on training, then you don't need to be working on cars at all. IMHO

Theres not much to painting a car, just read up on it, it's more realistic than peaking over somebodies shoulder for two days.

Not gonna happen. These guys pay a hella premium on insurance because of the fire risk. They are not going to let you stand around and watch. Besides, many of these guys have their own little secrets and tricks they don't like sharing.

thats how i got in.

Started out detailing, then moved to prep/paint work.

You'll find out its not that much fun, at all. I honestly hate the shit but its what im stuck doing for the time being.

I would just go to any paint shop and ask. Most places will probably say yes just because it is a free pair of hands.

This is almost as funny as the original post.

i honestly dont see whats wrong with his post IMO. I mean, what if someone here owned a small shop and wouldnt mind having someone else around. Is it that impossible? He's just asking.

did you actually read the post?

"all I would do is stand and watch"

He's not even offering free labor, if he were that might be different. Even then I can't imagine most shop owners taking on that liability. The only way I would train someone is if I thought they might be a long term employee.

The what-ifs are endless on things that could happen that would cost a shop owner time and money. For example, he touches fresh paint, he somehow gets hurt, etc.

Someone already mentioned giving away secrets of the trade.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined and have a fair amount of experience working with cars. I offered to work for free at a high scale performance shop and they didn't take me up on it. I forget the name of it, it's off Evans and Santa Fe. Tobi knows them.

Just go buy a spray paint set. Go and test your skills. See if you are any good and just learn from experience.

hey, just watch a few episodes of Pimp My Ride, Unique Whips, and Overhaulin.... go out get a can of body spray paint.... and practice on a junk car or fender.... its really not that hard, you just haveto know what to do. id ask how to do it instead of can u show me how to do it. there's plenty of free videos on the net showing how to paint a car, its simple, and i think you'd get less of a mouthy reaction.

It's really not rocket science it's just like spray painting but on a bigger scale, the real hard part is in the prep, and when your painting keeping contaminants out of your paint, so even if u do it your self I'd recommend renting a paint booth, but really it's not that hard just somewhat intimidating.
