I'm not sure who else into urban environments, but it's been occupying pretty much all of my time. I love skyscrapers and everything involved in the construction process. The worlds tallest building (by a lot) will soon top out. Right now concrete work is being completed and the steel framing will begin soon.

Dubai is undertaking incredible achievements. It's probably the only arab state I appreciate past its antisemitism. Keep in mind, this is in the middle of the desert.

Height: 808m (2650ft)
Floors: 162
Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
Developer: EMAAR Properties
General Contractor: Samsung Construction Company

Here is the initial city rendering:

Just so everyone understand the size of this building - the tallest building in Denver is Republic Plaza building at 714'. If you were to stand the Republic Plaza on end 3 times, it would still be 508' short of the tip of the spire on this building. The roof will be at 2034' meaning it's just under 3x taller than the tallest building in Denver.

I had a friend in college who was from dubai and its insane how much money that people who live their have.

You would think it's from oil, but the Today show had a thing about Dubai recently and I think they mentioned that only 8% of the money coming into Dubai was from oil.. the rest is from tourism and business investments.

BlueFang08

Well they know that their oil supply will not last forever. This is why they are trying to make themselves the financial capital of the middle east, which thus far they are doing a damn good job at.

I had a couple of job offers in the area, but being that I'm married with kids/mortgage/etc, it wouldn't be a wise thing. If I were unattached, however, I'd be in the middle east. :)

I applied for an contracting engineering job i found on CL but I lacked the military training req'd. It was a lot of tax free money.

That's not so much pollution as it is dust clouds from the sand.

I was over there for a while, and it's absolutely insane seeing all of the money and construction work going on. I don't envy the construction workers toiling away in the heat, though.

If you want to make a killing, sell those orange blinky light traffic barriers.. they seemed to be everywhere; every road was under construction or blocked off for construction workers building things alongside the road. Just crazy how much activity there was going on over there.

dampening systems? I don't see how keeping the thing moist is going to help with the swaying.

A British base jumper is being fined a little over $5k for jumping off the 150 floor (the first person to jump off the tower).

There is another tower that is beginning excavation very soon if it hasnt already begun in western Saudi Arabia that will surpass the Burj Dubai:
