View Full Version : Ever add up the cost of your car??

As some of you know, I've leaning heavily towards selling the car I built for my wife, which is why I was doing this to begin with. Not counting necessary parts, such as belts, fluids, sparkplugs, (you know, maintenance parts) and including the price of the car, I actually underestimated the cost to duplicate my results by about $1700!! It's scary how easily it adds up.

So far, I'm up to $6700 and growing as I remember mods. I can't believe I spent that much on a car she doesn't even want.

Including the cost of my car, and all the little shit like plugs and wires 6700. One expensive DA. That also includes all towing and labor costs. Minus 1500 from parts sold.

I spent $3,100 buying the Laser, about $2,000 more just after. To bring it back I spent $5,000 in the engine alone. That does not include the clutch, the turbo, or the brand new wheels and tires. The car is broken now, and more money will be needed to bring it back next summer. Talk about depressing.

Yeah I did that once and I approached something like $30k including all the parts I tried and then replaced, and all of the parts I have broken over the years. Axles & transmission add up.

Of course that included the car which was $13k new.

As you should be. I've kept track. I'm back on the "it's time to sell my car" boat. *shakes head*

The car cost me $15k. At that point, it was already somewhat modded. Everything that I have done to it has cost so far just under $9k. Looks like I'm coming up on another pretty expensive fix again, so we'll see how that goes.

As much as I love my car, deep down inside...I hate it with a passion.

I spent almost 10k in the motor and go fast parts on mine.

I got back almost 3k after parting it out and selling the shell.

Don't even want to think about it. I would probably have my house paid off already from just my monthly car payment lol.

I'm not even going to add up my Evo, as that would just completely depress me as I could have paid that off ages ago.

The thing is, I'm not even including labor, which is pretty much irrelevant as I do my own sans machining.

My 1973 VW bug was restored, painted, and nicely modded... It looked really good and ran good too. I had about $3000 into it, but the best price I could get for it was $1900, and that was years before the used car market went to crap.

My old Prelude beater had about $1500 into it, parts were constantly breaking, then the motor blew, and I sold it for like $300.

My turbo Integra had nearly $20k into it, most of it was never to be seen again... It was a track proven car, and I sold it for only $5k. I know I could have gotten more out of it, but selling a car is a pain in the ass so I just wanted to get it over with, and I still wouldn't get back most of what I had into it anyway.

My current track car is the opposite story... I've put about 25% as much money into it, and it's now worth considerably more than I sold the Integra for. Gotta love expensive Porsche mechanics that charge outrageous amounts of money to do things that I can easily do myself.

1983 Porsche 944 in need of some work $1100
New reference sensors $220
New SS braided fuel lines $120
New e-brake $40
Timing and balance belts & rollers $120
Misc tune-up, filters, gaskets, etc $150
Battery $50
Spare set of wheels w/ good tires $260
Race tires $625 including tax
Performance brake pads $85
Suspension $910 ($220 rear shocks + $260 torsion bars + $220 coil-overs + $210 sway bars)
External oil cooler $180
Rod bearings $60
Head gasket $40
NASA legal 6-point roll cage and other safety gear $1000-ish
Other misc stuff $200

Not including other things like my transponder, camera stuff, and driver's safety gear, the grand total is just over $5100 for a competitive race car, my cost was really only around $4300 due to freebies and discounts from sponsors, and similar race cars in my class have sold for well over $10k. This is the only time I've come out ahead on fixing up or modifying a car.

Weston, if only I was in the market for a FWD car when you were selling the Integra. I wouldn't consider buying one unless I could have had yours. That thing was as correct as it gets. I know that doesn't make sense but it does to me. I really wanted that car for a little bit there. It was right before I got my car together and I was considering selling my DSM to get it. On a side note, I couldn't imagine trying to maintain a Porsche race car! :p

When i had my EG, it cost me $5,500 in 99. I had the car 7 years, and all the reciepts i had spent on it in the end added up to over 30k.

In mods alone or are you including regular maintenance/repairs?

So far I would estimate under 7k including the price of the car. 11's for decently cheap was my goal, now I need a new goal

For the S2000 I spent $35k for the car 12k for mods then I sold it for 20k and thats not including all the money I spent on repairs. In hind sight it was kind of a waste of money but still fun.
