I'm probably going to try to pick up one of the two for my dad for Christmas on black Friday...if I can get a hold of one. But anyway, which one is better, whats advantages and disadvantages to the two?

Man - that's a tough one. It currently looks like Blu-Ray is "in the lead" as far as the number of titles available. If I were purchasing a player, I'd go with one which can read both formats. But I don't have $1k to blow on a dvd player...

Good luck, and let us know which direction you went.

you might want to look into what his favorite movies are... i think certain movie studios are going with specific formats... i.e. Disney is only blu ray

Until there is a clearcut winner or a decent dual format player I won't be buying either. I would hate to own the next betamax.

:werd: BluRay holds more data, and more movie studios support it, but pretty much everything about it costs more than HD-DVD, so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out. If I were to gamble, I'd go with HD-DVD because the significantly lower price attracts more consumers. Most users can't even tell the difference between a DVD-5 and a DVD-9, so aside from marketing hype, it's not like they're really going to care about the capabilities of HD-DVD vs BluRay.

I don't even see anything in stores about Blu-Ray or anything. In fact, the only reason I know that Blu-Ray even exists, is because of threads like this.

Not sure why you'd wait in line for it when Amazon already sells it for that price.

As tempting as it is to get either one right now, its still up in the air as to which technology will dominate the market in the next year or so. Of course, I could always buy and return one every 90 days from Costco.
