Still has charge(over head lights work), but when I try and turn it over, I get a "brr" sound. Real quick and doesn't sustain, doesn't keep trying to turn it over. Sounds like maybe a starter to me. If the starter's bad, can it be push started? Anyone have a pic of where the starter's located(god, I feel stupid)?

Ignition Coil? Is it cranking at all? My cap and rotor were bad once and all I got was a grinding sound.

What I'm reading on honda-tech it's sounding like a starter. Also, I relocated a ground this weekend, could that be the problem?

definatly could be a problem, did you scuff it up to get a good contact patch or make sure theres no paint in the threds.

no spark try this

the starter is located below the distributor, mounted on the trans. follow the positive battery cable to the starter

My friend did a battery location and he thought it was that as well went through all the trouble of moving it back to find out it was the alternator.

Ummm...yeah(runs off to go scuff the paint off the contact area).

Damn it, I knew better, but was being lazy. I'll relocate it back to stock at lunch, and see if that works. Thanks. :)

And yea you can push start if it's your starter.

Well, rechecking the ground didn't work.

Check your starter to see if its getting power with a volt meter or go to checkers, vatozone or advanced and have them check it...Try push starting it.

Hopefully I can head up there when my boss gets back from lunch. Friggin $130 +$55 core is the best price I can find. :guns:

I am sure somebody has a good b-series starter on here for cheaper than that.

Its wierd that my buddy did the same thing move the ground and had the same thing happen. Hopefully its only the starter he was pissed when his turned out to be the alternator called H-motors cause it was a fresh sweap and they told him he was SOL.

Hit the starter.

Well, tried to push start it. Wouldn't work. When I let the clutch out, it just grabbed hard, like it didn't wanna turn over? Now I'm really starting to worry.

You can also try running a wire directly from the battery positive terminal to the starter signal and see if it'll meatspin.

The thing that sucks is, the cars sitting here in the Med Group parking lot on Peterson AFB. I don't have access to alot of things right now.

If the starter motor was seized, would it have trouble push starting?

Eric

If you thinks it's just seized do what someone else said earlier and give it a good wack. Other than that try pushing it faster before letting the clutch out :P

Edit: I'd definitely have it tested before replacing the starter. Most of my "dead starters" have indeed been dead starter solenoids.

Guess I'll head out and give it a good whack with a hammer. Wish me luck.

If I could get it to an autozone to get tested, or if I could bring someone on base with me, to help figure this out, it'd be greatly appreciated. Might buy some dinner.

If you aren't hearing a click coming from the car when the key is turned to start then chances are it's the solenoid or the battery isn't holding enough of a charge to engage it, any kind of grind from the starter would generally mean the solenoid is doing it's job.

If all else fails you can pull the starter and take it with you to autozone.

I'm on Ft. Carson lmk if you end up needing a hand or ride.

I hit it with the hammer, nothing. Also, found out the power cable was loose. With some jiggling, got the starter to click repeatedly. The guy who was with me said he saw tiny metal shavings coming off the starter when I was trying to start it.

Eric, if you can come out here tonight or sometime and help me replace the starter, I'd be much in debt.

if it helps.. it's only a couple of 14mm bolts, the starter cable might take a 12mm. the pain in the ass is getting it through all the stuff right there, maybe pull off the air intake tube to get room.

Well, Erik came out(THANKS ALOT!!!), and showed me that it was a dead battery due to a shot alternator. Fuck that'll make me feel stupid. Bigger problem on the way home. Motor started dumping oil. He thinks it the rear main seal.

Car's gonna have to sit til I get the bottom end rebuilt. Good thing is, I already have the rings and bearings, just waiting for the person rebuilding it to have the free time.

Eric

Dumping is an understatement :P . If it is indeed the rear main you would think there'd be more of a lead up, not such a catastrophic failure all at once but, the location it's coming from looks like a rear main seal to me. Perhaps someone else has some other suggestions as to where the oil might be coming from.

Like i said earlier though when you can get under it, take a look at the joint between the transmission and block and lmk if that's where it's coming from.
