The tops of the pistons are hemispherical. Don't know much history on them but I think at the time it was pretty high tech.

The top of the piston is hemispherical and the spark plug sits dead center over the piston(unlike most cars). They came in a few cars back in the day, and the new hemi is supposed to show itself in one of dodges cars pretty soon I believe.

Do'h, It wasn't the pistons stupid:D;) It featured hemispherical combustion chambers. Which are the where the piston goes into the cylinder head. The spark plug is placed in the center of the cylinder. A cylinder head off of a chevy or ford would be referred to as a wedge style the plug comes in through the side of the head. Chrysler also had a 426 max wedge with this style head.

You seen the new Dodge truck commercial with the guys in the old muscle car. They pull up next to the new Dodge hemi truck pulling a Dodge Charger and they "does it have a hemi?" The driver of the truck replies "yes" and then when the light turns green the truck pulls away for the old car and at the next light the two guys look stunned and the truck guy says "oh,I thought you mean the truck". :D:D

They're bitch slappin' their own species. "beat:

yea, the two guys in the rust bucket were totally stereotypical rednecks.

Our civic head from what I can gather are like a cross between a hemi and a wedge.

Dodge isn't the only manufacturer to build Hemi's. Toyota has one I believe, Lots do, but Dodge's was first and the most talked about. It started in the fifties when "Big Daddy" Don Garlits and many other people bought a new engine for thier tow vehicles. Soon after Don Garlits thought it would be cool to see what the tow vehicle would do in the 1/4 mile. So he ran it, I am unsure of the time, but everyone was immpressed. Back then manufatures didn't test and publish the facts about thier engines as much as today. So, anyway.. a couple weeks later, "Big Daddy" Don Garlits had a Hemi in his race car and proceded to beat up on everyone in the race scene and soon more and more people got them and thats how it came to be so popular.

sounds like v-tec... there are better systems out thre that work on the same idea, but no one really talks about them... when was the last tim you saw a "V V T I power" sticker.

sorry to revive a dead thread, but i thought i'd shed some insight here.

hemi's are superior from wedge because of flame travel. as pressure expands outwards it's focused off the walls into a flat pressure front, ideal to press on the full circular area of the piston top. think of it sort as the reverse of a satellite dish.

and most imports use pentroof design, originally from Yamaha i believe

That things got a Hemi right?

They also used pushrods which itself was a hurdle to cross in the hemi design.

I'm sorry to revive a dead thread as well, but I've got a correction regarding the H-series stuff.

The H22A1 (found in 93-96 USDM Preludes), the H23A1 (found in 92-96 Prelude Si's) and the H22A (found in 92-96 JDM Preludes) had closed deck designs. The H22A4 (found in 97+ Ludes) has an open deck design.

Thought I'd shed some light.

The Reason hemi's of the late 60's and early 70's were so popular and revered is becuase you got an engine in a car that would make it do wheel stands the day you drive it off the lot... they made huge power and were exceptionally good and embarrassing other cars in races.

they were the BFG9000's of their day...
hehehe....:D

some of the fastest "STOCK" hemis churned out no faster than 12.70 1/4 mile times at 108 MPH. Hardly wheel standers.
If they did pull a wheel off the ground it wasnt because the stock suspension was doing them any favors.

Well shit I wish there was a car in the realm of affordability that could [QUOTE]churned out no faster than 12.70 1/4 mile times at 108 MPH[/QUOTE}, jesus christ.... you can't buy a car from the factory for less than $70k and get that kind of power, you could pick up a hemi equiped vehicle for less that $10k brand new, granted there are major economic changes, inflation bla, bla, bla, but that is why the hemi was so popular, and average person with a modest income could afford it.

and come on... they did wheel stands from the factory!!!!, and I don't recall hearing about any other car of that era, or this one for that matter being capable of the same feat, from the factory, shitty suspension or not....;)

I havent ever seen a wheelstand from any old domestic running 12.7's while on big ass slicks.

pearlvr4
04-21-2003, 01:06 AM
most cars will not do wheel stands running slicks, I said they did them off the show room floor, modify the grip of a vehicle and you can definitly prevent it from doing wheel stands, but stock they had the ability.
