i have a friend that has a b18a1 in his car and when he starts the car only when cold for maybe 2 sec it has this knocking noise and it sounds like the vavles are hitting but not sure i think that it is the bearings not sure need help we are going to adjust the vavles tomorrow if that doesn't fix it then we it be the bearings right........might be looking for an engine
Is it a stock motor? Could it be piston slap?

Piston slap or loose vavle train.

My old Integra's first engine did that... it turned out to be a rod knock. It would sound like a diesel engine for a second or two on cold starts, and then it would go away once the oil was pressurized. It was way back before I knew much about working on engines, so I didn't know what it was until after getting progressively worse over about two weeks, it shit what was left of the #2 rod bearing into the oil pan and left me stuck on the side of Highway 36.

so he told me last night at two it was doing it all the time now so it is a rod bearing now. can i replace the bearing that is messed up and then would it be good to go or is that shit toast and i should just tell him to get a new engine? please help

depends there could be scaring in the cylinder walls and if there is he'll have to get it honed. Or the rod could getbent and you'll have t get a new rod.

You will also need to verify that the crankshaft hasnt taken any damage if a rod bearing did poop out.

ok so i took the #3 rod bearing out it was smashed the others were good put a new one in and i checked everything it was all ok.
so i put every thing back together started the car it started right up but it had ticking like way before and we knew it needed a valve adjustment a long time ago so i did the adjustment.
we drove it around shifting at 3500 in every gear and then this cavailer pulled up to a light and it had this white body kit on the red car and he wanted a race.
so my friend raced him but the when he went to 5000 rpm in first gear this knocking noise happened so he let off the gas and it stopped and the cevy flashed his turns and got away with a win that he didn't deserve.
but this noise only happens above 4000 and when you push the gas.
so could it be the plugs or wires or cap and rotor or dizzy or something else.
should i take it apart and check bearings again?
or replace dizzy rotor cap plugs and wires first i have all the stuff to do it.
Did you check the crank for scarring? Did you pull the rod & piston out and inspect the cylinder walls?

Hmm. Sounds like my 2nd Gen Eclipse. We ended up replacing all the bearings, and crank, babied it for about 2 weeks, then it started doing it again. Still drove it, got off the highway, completely died, there was an extremely loud clunking noise, got it running again, drove it home, sold it. Didnt feel like tearing through it again. Eh, Good luck, I hope you figure it out.
