Anyone have an ARC welder that is portable? Or maybe can weld with nickel rod? Here is why I need this:

I bent the fork and broke the front ear off where the bellhousing bolts up to the block. The guy in the thread above broke the rear, but the front is the most common.

"Eh I think it was my own fault on why it broke actually. Set up correctly I don't think it will fail. When I got the car running towards the end of this season I kinda rushed it just to drive it for the last few weeks of last season."

I find the coincidental nature of this to be amusing. lol.

I have a little 70 amp ARC welder, but I'd suggest something with more amperage than that. Although it does weld material "up to 1/4" thick". Soooo, I guess I'll be the last ditch on this one.

Edit: I am not a welder, thusly i weld only on things I own.

I had a RevHard cast iron turbo manifold repaired a few years ago, and I believe it was a bronze rod that had to be used to maintain a compatible expansion rate. There was also some talk about filling the thing with sand when it was done.

Thanks Eric, I will have to see what my options are. The rod I keep seeing used for this is nickel. What was with the sand?

Perhaps as a heat sink of sorts to help retain the shape of the metal whilst being heated. I doubt that method could be used with your application though.

There is another option I am entertaining involving making a mount that connects to the motor mount near were the ear broke off. I had a pic of it earlier, that might be the only way to get this done. I don't want to yank the motor again for this. I will be keeping the old block after all. If I can get someone to do it with the nickel rod, I won't have to worry about it breaking off again. I will be weighing the options all day tomorrow...

Here is the thread with the picture of the other option. This is the replacement piece made to attach to the motor mount:

In spite of my limited DSM knowledge, I'd say it looks pretty solid. Preventative maintenance ftw.
