My grandpa wants to keep a pistol in his house for self protection because there is a lot of new construction around his house.

He is 81 and doesnt speak english very well, so he told me to work out the details.

First - Gun recommendations? This isnt something he will go shooting with every weekend. This is to be as low maintenance and easy to fire as possible.

What's required for him to purchase the gun? He is a US Citizen and has never been arrested or anything like that.

He doesnt want to buy a 2nd hand gun, wants something new. Where do we go? He lives in Lafayette.

Does he want a pistol or a revolver (aka six-shooter)? A revolver is as simple and low-maintenance as it gets, but it only holds 6 rounds of ammunition. If you get a semi-automatic pistol, ammo capacity is much better, but there's more complexity and parts (which need to be cleaned and lubricated), and the possibility of jamming comes into play (although it's not much of any issue with good quality stuff).

Being that you say he lives in Lafayette and wants a gun, I'm betting that he lives over on the East end of town... It kind of goes downhill the further East of 287 you are.

I'd prefer a semi-auto but if it's cheap and reliable a 6 shooter will do the job too.

He lives off 287 and robinhood? They bought that house before nearly any of that crap was around it.

He can get a gun at a gun shop or certain sporting goods stores. He only needs to pass a BG check, sounds like he should be fine.

he should have no problem getting a gun. go to a gun shop and have him hold different guns in his hands to see what is the most comfortable for him. one thing to look into is he wants a manual safety. some guns have a manual thumb safety, while glocks/XD's only have a trigger or grip safety. that comes into play when you are in a situation where you need to make split second decisions.

Any good store in Lafayette?
What should I expect to pay for a gun that he probably will never fire?

500 or more for something quality.

Go to Jensen Arms in Loveland. They will hook you up.
I'd suggest a .38 special revolver for something that's just going to sit in a drawer. Cheaper than most autoloaders too.

There isnt much that I know of around Lafayette, but there is a really good store that sells LOTS of new/used/consignment guns in Boulder..I imagine just talking to those guys and seeing how a few fit his hand/weight would be the way to go.

Basically if hes not a felon, nor commited any sex crimes or on some restraining order its a piece of cake..the CBI check almost always takes longer the first time you get a gun however, so best to go at some off time.

If he's gonna keep it in the house, and only the house, King Shit of Protectin Yo House is the shotgun. But, he IS 82, so it might be a bit too much for him.

I recommend a revolver in .38 Special. Dont buy a 2" snub nose for home defense, thats just dumb as shit. Dont get the 6", either. Bastard sticks out way too far from your chest and provides too much leverage for someone to yank it out of your hands. Get a 4" barrel, some good hollowpoints (I recommend Winchester Rangers, but I dunno if they even put those in .38spcl).

Do yourself a huge favor and dont fucking bother with Taurus. Ive seen too many of them BLOW THE FUCKING BARREL OUT THE FRONT OF THE GUN. Get a Smith and Wesson instead. Also, when looking for a used revolver (seriously there is nothing wrong with a used revolver, if you think otherwise you are a giant homo), this guid comes in pretty fuckin handy.

make sure you check out the followup commentary as well, cuz theres good info in there too

ps rugers are good too, but if you get a taurus or a rossi i hope your grampa hits you with it (i dont really mean that, i hope gramps is a nice guy who looks at you funny and then returns it himself)

The thread title sounds like a cheesy novel made into a sappy movie.

how come he doesnt speak english very well? Whats that about? Should he even be allowed to have a gun? Just wondering since im all into the rights to own firearms but it sounds like your buying the gun for him for some reason. When he could go to the store himself and fill out the paperwork and buy one. Why do u have to go buy it. Just sounds suspicious cuz like the first thing u say is he doesnt speak english very well, and u gotta go buy the gun for him.

He doesnt speak English well because we immigrated when he was 67 years old. I'll pay for it because I'm a good grandson?

Well cool pay for it. Just sayin u made it kinda sound suspicious, and my thought on guns is that if a person cant go into the store themselves and legally purchase a gun for themself then u should question whether or not that person should be holding a gun, whether its for a family member or not. My question wasnt why u were paying for it my question was why u had to buy it. Meaning go to the store and purchase yourself and then take home and give to grandfather. Plus yeah its great to have all ur loved ones strapped but u better make sure they know what the fuck there doing. Its not like oh go buy my grandma a gun for protection. Next day u find out she accidently shot her cat. Plus im thinking that once u get to the age where ur driving 20miles under the speedlimit and sometimes down the wrong side of the road, or atleast its a very real possibility that anyday now ur gonna end up like this u probally shouldnt be messin with guns. Dont get me wrong i love my grandparents, i would just be scared shitless if they had a gun or if they were driving me around.
