View Full Version : Beefing up security
I know there are several options available besides an alarm, but I'd like to increase my car security. PM me if you have any suggestions.
TIA

A good alarm and a couple of kill switches will be hands down the best thing you can do short of someone towing the car away.
Don't know too much about kill switches. Any good articles?

With that option, don't forget the $50k+ you'll need for the lawsuits afterwards.

Here my favorite kill switch...
Most aftermarket headunits these days are detachable face. I'm not sure if they are all like my Alpine, but when the face is removed from the deck it shuts it off as well as my amps. I have the amp remote wire on my deck wired to 2 seperate relays. One relay runs my amps and one relay runs my fuel pump. So without the face on my deck my car won't run. That way I have no physical switch hidden somewhere that someone can find if they had enough time to look for one.
The relays are hidden basically for appearence, but they are mounted where I can get to them if I happen to lose my face or it gets stolen. Just unplug the relay and pop in a jumper wire and I'm on my way.

Wow man, awesome idea. Thanks for posting. I know many other people who have done similar things but with their headlight (or foglight or rear defroster) switches as well.

As for kill switches, don't even waste your time killing the starter or the fuel pump... both are too common and easy to get around. Kill something vital, but less common, harder for the thief to diagnose, and not easily bypassed... sensor signal wires are great for this because it'll confuse the thief, waste time that he doesn't have, and even if he figures out what you cut he can't just simply connect 12V power to it and bypass it.

Many options out there. Anything from switches to hidden alarms to gps tracking to remote video surveillance.
Link below is the portal :).

Thieves will still try to steal it. Even if you dont own one.

If you are tricky enough and good enough to hide your work you can make some very effective kill switches on the fuel pump. The starter IS a total waste of time though. Push starting is just as easy. The trick is to confuse the poor braindead little pricks so they give up and run. The more I do this the better ways I am finding (tee hee) to disable the cars. GPS is nice too in case they get real smart and tow it off to another location.

Good philosophy. Nice shop too. Im jealous of the flat screen though. :D

KILL SWITCH. but lets face it if someone really wants your car they will get it.
Isn't having a detachable steering wheel illegal because there is no airbag for collision safety purposes?

Give the remote wire off of your headunit a try as a kill switch. Then just remove your faceplate. When my garage was broken into they tried to steel my Eclipse. I had my fuel pump wired up to a relay running off of my headunit's remote wire. I always remove my faceplate and at the time it was in my center console since it was in my garage. I always take it with me now, before I would take it with me unless it was parked in my garage.
They got my car started, but it apparently died shortly after cause it never left my garage. They completely destroyed my dash, including pulling my headunit out, looking for a kill switch. It worked great, still had my car. I have no visable relays and no easy way to get to them. I know its easy to get around by just supplying 12v on the remote wire, but how often will a thief think of that and spend the time trying to rewire it.
What if you lose the faceplate or it breaks?

Thats a pretty good sneaky idea. You shouldnt post info like this though, someone savy enough to search your IP "might" be able to track down your car and use this info against ya. Just my $.02 though.

I recommend not losing it. If you happen to lose it or it breaks, it shouldn't be too hard hook your remote wire up to 12 volts.

Its worked well for me so far. At the time I dont have anything worth stealing so I'm not worried about it. My car actually has the stock radio in it now so it doesn't make a difference. lol

depends on the kind of car, transmission, brand of remote start, etc. I can put one in for you. PM me all that if you're interested.
