Anyone else as stoked about the Rockies as I am? I've been to 15-16 games this year, and completely estatic about them possibly making the playoffs! 9 straight wins, highest since 1997.....teams we need to lose are losing, hunt for October is getting hot!

They are starting to sell NLCS tickets too!

I've been following them all year. 10 straight! I'd love to see a sweep of the Padres and Diamondbacks so that the Rocks can get in as Division Champs. That would be one hell of a turnaround! The best thing about this years team is the number of 9th, 10th and 11+ inning wins. I've been waiting for 12 years for this to happen.

I don't follow baseball, so I don't know what this means for the Rockies. I watched the end of the game last night since it was on in the gym. I was happy with the outcome. So anyway, does this mean that there is still a wild card chance that the Rockies can go to the play-offs?

So how many teams are generally in the play-offs in baseball? How many wins will we have to have in order to go to the World Series? What does everyone think that our chances are?

So how many teams are generally in the play-offs in baseball? How many wins will we have to have in order to go to the World Series? What does everyone think that our chances are?

Ok, I'll lay it out for you ;)

There are two conferences in the MLB....National league and American League. Then every conference is divided into divisions, East, Central, and West. Every team in the MLB plays 162 games from Feb-end of Sept.

Now at the end of the 162 games, the top of each division will win their "Division Champions", and then only ONE team out of the whole conference is able to become the wild card. So you not only have to be he second from the top of the divisions, but also the conferences.

So the issue with the game with Padres is that the Rockies and Padres had the same exact record after the 162 games (89-73), and it comes down to a one game playoff.....whoever wins, gets the NL wildcard, whoever loses...packs their bags.

Now that they are in the wildcard there are now 4 teams to play for the american league divisional chamiions, and 4 teams to the national league divisional champions.

Here is who is playin for each league:

NLDS-
Chicago Cubs vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
Colorado Rockies vs. Philidelphia Phillies

ALDS-
New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians
Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox

So each of those series, will be 5 games total, so first team to 3 wins the division.......home field advantage gets home two games, away two games, tie goes back home

So whoever wins that goes to the Conference championsships.......which is best out of 7 games ,the winner of that goes to the World Series, which is the best team of the American League vs. the best game of the National League :D

When it comes to something besides hockey, I don't really know what the hell is going on. I am finally starting to learn all the rules of football (thanks to my husband) :) I watch football all the time, I just really never understood how it was played. Now I actually know what's going on when I watch them.

We're going to buy the center ice package at home, so hockey will be on just about every nite at our house from now until the end of the playoffs. hehe, I'm so excited!

I just love Colorado sports in general. I'm a Denver native, so I believe in supporting the hometown team.

Series Prediction
You have to love both teams' offenses. The Rockies have a slight edge in the bullpen and with the leather. But Cole Hamels is a difference maker at the top of the Philly rotation, and there's enough uncertainty in the No. 2 through No. 4 spots on the Rockies' staff to make you wonder whether Corpas and Fuentes will get to pitch with many leads. The Rockies' incredible run has made me a fan for the past few weeks. But I think it ends here. Phillies in 3.

So much for that prediction.

Could have done more damage to Cole Hamels if the real MVP doesnt leave the bases loaded, but he made up for it later...

Laziest?? LOL

What sport out there plays 162 games from March-September?? If you've ever played baseball in high school or beyond, you will know that 20-25 games in the same time sequence is tiring.

What about golf? Thats what I call lazy, one event every month or so, and top winners make 2-3million an event. Look at Tiger Woods, he makes like 16 million a year, for 20 events in 12 months....definatly makes baseball look like the laziest sport and highest paying

Sure it does Terry. This is the only team sport involving more than 2 people on a team, that can be won or lost by only 2 people on that team. Baseball is drivin by the pitcher and catcher more then any other position on the team. There isn't much strategy outside of batting lineup, and the pitches thrown.

The only thing that even keeps the game remotly interesting is the amount of games played in a season.

Skill or no skill I think little league and HS baseball is a hell of a lot more interesting. Pro baseball sucks donkey balls.

From my limited experience playing baseball and softball, there is a lot to be said about when you throw to which bases. It seems simple, and it certainly can be, but it can also be much more complicated. There are a lot of other things that go into it as well. Especially when you get into fake tagging, and the other mental tricks of the game. Like you though, I've never been much of a fan of baseball, so I'm not really one to talk.

I look at baseball similar to Nascar, I can see how some people could enjoy it, but it's really not my style.

Speaking of NASCAR, my company just bought one of the race series. So instead of Busch Series, it will be Nationwide Series...or something like that.

Martian
10-03-2007, 06:12 PM
You wanna make pro baseball interesting and put more strategy in the game, get rid of home runs. Make every player have to hit in the field and quit swinging away, then every at bat will have to be planned out. Then the other players on D are guaranteed to be more active in every play. I'd watch a game with that rule.

Terry
10-03-2007, 06:29 PM
If you think baseball is boring i can only imagine what you think of soccer

Skaterkid
10-03-2007, 06:35 PM
Baseball is a very strategy oriented game. Before the game you have to pick your lineup due to how your every player on your team hits the pitcher in question. When you're in a game you have to pick and choose when you use a certain pitcher. How does the other team hit him? How many batters can you pitch him to before you get someone who potentially will hit that pitcher well?

When you're in the field, how many outs are there? What bases have a player on them? If the ball is a high fly ball where do you throw? Line drive same question. You have to know where to throw so that you keep as few runs from scoring as possible. What pitch is being thrown? Because depending on the pitch and its location you can position yourself so that you have better odds of fielding a ball. Also, if a batter is a pull hitter or a spray hitter will determine your position in the field. And whether he's a lefty or a righty. Ground ball same question.

If you're on base how many outs are there? What base are you on? If you're fast, what count do you run on? Is the pitcher a lefty or a righty? Cause that will determine when and if you run.

If you're hitting you depending on the count and what pitches the pitcher throws well determines how you approach an at bat. Most players aren't out to hit a homerun every single at bat.

Then there's games like bunting, fake bunting, trick plays, hidden ball trick, pickoff plays, and if you're a fast runner you can distract the pitcher to give your teammate potentially a better pitch by leading off a lot and being a threat to steal.

Is that enough strategy? There's plenty of games within baseball, you just have to know it well enough, like any sport. I don't care if you don't like baseball, that's cool, no sports for everyone. I'm just trying to show that there's more to baseball than two people. Saying there is little strategy in baseball is like saying the only strategy in drag racing is to go fast and in other forms of racing to pass everyone else. There's always little strategy's you can use to help your team win.

Martian
10-03-2007, 07:04 PM
Perhaps I should have worded it differently. There is not much game strategy outside of what I mentioned. There is individual strategy for the runners on base to a point, and playing shallow in the field, playing left or right depending on batter ect. I played baseball for years all the way up through HS. I'm not just some back seat layman spouting off.

Its just not entertaining as far as pro sports go anymore. Neither is golf Nick! However golfers don't go on strike because they're not making enough. They only get paid if they perform well. I don't watch hockey anymore because of crap like that. Talent or no talent its a damn game.

It takes less individual skill to play baseball then it does to play most other pro team sports. Case in point, how many players in the MLB are able to play into their 40's? late 40's even. How many other sports have nearly as many players as old as baseball? If ts your thing go for, cool, I don't mean to keep you from it. I do however find it ironic that there are so many people jumping on the rockies tail now that they're doing well again. Most of whome couldn't tell you what an RBI was. They all know who Barry Bonds is though don't they?

Edit: I appologize for my spelling and gramatical errors. I can't type for shit and I notice more and more errors everytime I read one of my posts. :)

Laziest??

Tiger made more like $100 mil. this year.

I'm with Robbie on this one. There is a lot more to baseball than just the pitcher and catcher. Hence the reason why you see a lot of teams suck. If it was up to just two players, that's what the teams could spend most of their money on and say screw the rest. But since it's a team sport, you have to make sure you have players that can field a ball and make the plays. That's like saying football is only about the quarterback. Yeah, a good quarterback will help a ton but you still have to have a solid rest of the team. Baseball sounds easy but you'd be surprised at how many people don't know what to do. I play on a softball team and I'd say that half of the people don't know the basic fundamentals of the game. They think it's an easy game that doesn't take skill/knowledge.

Let's not forget about base running. Aggressive base running can make the difference in games. Also, look at the angels. They don't have a lot of powerful hitters so what do they do? They run first to third. Get a man on first, then get a base hit again so they have runners on first and third. Then they just go for simple base hits and keep moving the runners from first to third and third to home. It's a good strategy that they have and they are in the playoffs.

As for the homeruns, it makes the game more interesting IMO. It's nice to know when you're down in runs, that one hit can sometimes bring you back into the game.

To each their own though...

I think deals like Clemens got are pretty rediculous and I don't think the Yanks will see the Series this year.....again.

Baseball players are paid silly salaries in part due to there being no salary cap.

PHILADELPHIA -- Rockies manager Clint Hurdle downplayed video that showed closer Manny Corpas pouring liquid on his body in the bullpen before pitching against Philadelphia in Game 1 of the NL Division Series.

Corpas was caught by TBS cameras on Wednesday taking a sip of a liquid out of a cup and then pouring some down the back of his neck and all over the front of his jersey. Corpas, who earned the save in Colorado's 4-2 win, patted his chest and rubbed his fingers before throwing a pitch.

"I still haven't looked at the tape so I still don't know what happened," Hurdle said Thursday before Game 2. "Until I get further direction from somebody else, I think we'll handle it internally."

Because the Rockies wear black road jerseys, any wet spots would have been difficult to detect. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he had nothing to say about Corpas' actions.

The Rockies haven't done well in the early innings of most of the games they've played in the playoffs. This game is NOT over.

Still 6 more possible left. Bad pitching game. They'll pull through.
