so, i get this little rar file in my e-mail today from a friend, that says "this came out last night. upload it to your iphone, and all is good."
so i decide to try it out. it's a 100% fully funcitonal software unlock for the iphone....i bet apple is PISSED right about now!
google free software unlock iphone or shoot me a PM and i'll forward it to ya, but yeah, basically every last security measure on this thing has been broken, non-native software, etc =D Great news for all the t-mobile people out there =)

Apple isn't pissed, AT&T is pissed more then anyone....People are already buying the iPhone, meaning Apple is still making their dough, AT&T is losing out on people using it for T-mobile services.
You lose out on a few features on the hack too, you cant have YouTube and a few other things

Yeah, now more people will buy the iPhone since it can be so easily unlocked. The one who gets hurt is AT&T, since they no longer have a monopoly on iPhones, but I can't say that I feel too sorry for them.

And mind you, all iPhones are bought out of contract....so its AT&T's logic behind the idea thats shafting them in the end

i meant to type AT&T is pissed, but got them switched up =P this is great for apple, moving tons of devices and cementing themselves in as a mobile phone manufacturer for later models, getting a massive amount of people to start using icrap, er itunes, etc. Now I wish they'd get their asses inline and get some flash support on this device.
As of right now, my t-mobile iphone has all of the features working except visual voicemail, including youtube. Visual voicemail is a server side app, so there's no chance of it ever becoming available on anything other than AT&T.
Youtube does require an extra step, but it's pretty simple. Use winscp to connect with the phone, replace the youtube AUTH files with a legitemately activated iphone, connect to youtube, then restore your original auth files, and you're set. You can use the same legit auth file as many times as you'd like, i've used mine on 7 devices now.
So could I use the I-phone for Verizon then?

hm, on my two devices, one on my at&t service, on on the woman's t-mobile service, the data seems to be a bit faster on at&t. Both are EDGE, and both have no trouble streaming web and youtube, but when downloading apps from installer at&t's network is clearly faster

no sorry, verizon is a CDMA carrier, where the iphone is a GSM phone. different wireless technologies, different frequencies even. T-Mobile & AT&T are the only ones in the area that run GSM.

I might jump on the bandwagon that I once was talking smack about and get an iPhone. A guy I work with has a 4G brand new in box for cheap he said he'll sell me. He keeps reminding me everyday how the iPhone is the last phone he ever wants or needs etc. etc.

Still does not have A2DP... I go mine on CL for $350 for an 8gb and I have unlocked it a week ago using the pin method... I like it just use my ROKR E6 until some one hacks the BT for A2DP it is BT 2.0 compliant so it should no be long.

ya its all thanks to that kid that took his summer to hack it, and got a 350z out of it lol... but it can only be used on gsm networks.. and they have the new iphone touch, which is slimmer and lighter i guess than the oriignal iphone.

twas just a matter of time, stupid iphone wastes so much of my time. At&t really needs to start subsidizing these things. So many things i would do different, but whatever, thats corporate america.
How's the camera on the iPhone?

Pretty damn good from pics I've seen on other forums
Hmmm... maybe I'll switch from my Sidekick. Tempting, since this Sidekick is such a huge freaking brick.
It takes MUCH better pictures than the Sidekick. I've seen both in person. If I had to choose between two phones that don't send SMS, I'd pick the Iphone in a jiffy.

From what I hear, AT&T only had the exclusive rights to the phone for one year. Anyone else hear about this? They will be taking a hit, but if this is true then it will not be as bad as we initially thought it would.

after talking with jon that just bought a inventory sale of the 4gigs, and his g/f has an iphone also... you can go to the apple store to buy the phone, they do not active it on the spot. you take the phone home to active it.
so basically you can buy the phone, run the unlocker, and pop in a tmobile sim. i'm sure there are alot of tweeting that you will need to do. for instance, the voicemail box #, SMS and text ports, and the data proxys. might be a lot of trouble to get it running right on tmobile.
i am browsing howardforums for more info.

was pretty straightforward to getting it to run correctly on t-mobile, there was tweaking required for data and sms portals, though. Oh and that apple Touch is going to be an ipod, no phone or wireless data functions.
To anyone considering trying this, remember that any update apple releases can simply fuck your phone. It's entirely possible for them to reflash your baseband and relock the phone. i'm sure the hackers will have a new fix out within a few days afterwards, but remember that it may suck to be phoneless the few days it takes the hackers to re-unlock the phone. This current version has no stealth features, so it most likely will be reversed soon, unless it's rewritten to avoid detection.
The iphone absolutely does SMS, if it didn't i would shrivel up and die because i'm a text whore. It doesn't do MMS, but i'd rather e-mail anyway. As for the camera, i've got this badass little app called iflickr on my phone that automatically uploads and stores the pictures i want to flickr, to check out the phone's quality go to http://flickr.com/photos/13361299@N05/

but if you don't pair it up with itunes, you should not take a firmware update from apple. correct?

correct. however, itunes is the ONLY way to get music/movies onto the device atm. Easiest way is to simply not install the update until a few days later when the fix is released.

actually why would apple care, they've received $ for the phone already, they could care less if it was used on another service provider. ATT does not control itunes, so they can't push a software update anyway.

apple gets a kickback from AT&T for every activation, so both companies benefit from at&t activations. on top of that, if they don't make it seem like they're making any attempt whatsoever to keep it an at&t exclusive, no carrier is going to want to pay them for future devices that they believe apple won't do anything to protect their investment in.

Not too shabby. Thanks Jon.
For all the iPhone fans and haters out there here's (http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone) a funny but true article about the phone that I've been rocking for almost two years now and how it stacks up to the iPhone.
Warning: If you've recently spent a lot of money on an iPhone this will not make you wonder why you spent so much.

meh, I don't see a need to upgrade to 1.1.1 anyway. All they really added was the iTunes store, which you have to be on wifi to access. I don't use the iTunes store anyway, and if I did I can just use my computer and sync.
Nintendo games, tetris, and summerboard as well as being able to upload my own non iTunes ringtones and use any carrier beat the hell out if having iTunes support. If they ever implement flash, that's when I'll update.

Yes, 1.1.1 is able to be downgraded back to 1.0.2 and reunlocked, but the 1.1.1 firmware itself is still not yet compromised. If you are using an unlocked, stay away from 1.1.1, or you will have to revert to 1.0.2 to reunlock anyway. ATM, 1.1.1 hasn't even been properly jailbreaked yet.

Yeah I agree I have my 4gig on T-mobile with 1.02. I really dont see the need to update. The only major bug that happens every once in awhile is the ipod shutting off while i am using safari.

There ar a bunch of problems being reported with the new firmware updates. Even the downgrades are bricking the phones. We usually update a few times a day with apple and iphone news. http://www.tagsum.com/news/search?q=iphone&t=tags
