It's called the idiot tax or the "I have to have it now" tax. All cell phones drop in price over their life cycles. Top of the line phones are the worst for depreciation.

I wouldn't go that far. All technology drops in price. By that logic, anyone, who buys a computer ever is an idiot. You can pick up a 10 yr old computer on ebay right now for $15. Buying it new for $3k was a total waste.

It's really just a smart move by apple.

Everyone who already purchased an iPhone for $500 or $600 did so because it was worth that much for them, to have it then. Any semi-intelligent consumer would know that it will drop in price, they simply have to ask themselves if it's worth it to them. If they decide that it is, and shell out the $$$, then it's not really a bad decision at all. In fact, by definition, it's a perfectly rational one.

I'm suprised more companys don't do this. Look at how much money people on Ebay made off selling Wii's and PS3s. Why did they make that cash? Because those things have different values to different people. When they sell it at a single price to everyone, some people end up paying less than they would of. People on Ebay capitalized on this, and purchased the units (which were in very low supply) first, then sold them to people for the price that people were willing to pay. The result was (I have no idea on the exact figure, but I can guess) millions of dollars that was going to people.

It's pretty amazing that companys don't do this more often. That's millions of dollars other people are making off of their product. Don't you think they'd like to shift that cash into their own pocket if they can?

Update:

Car dealerships and publishers are the most common example of this type of business...that I can think of.

I don't have to explain car dealerships.

Publishers put out the MUCH more expensive hardback editions of books first, then, months later, restock shelves with the cheaper paper back books. Even though it's the same exact book.

The people who either want the book right away, or like the author enough to have the hardback edition will pay the greater initial cost. Then, those less in a hurry to read the book, or those less willing to pay the mark up, can purchase the same book months later for a greatly discounted price.

Same thing with DVD releases.

the 4 gig iphones are on apple's site now for $299. They are just trying to get rid of them it seems.

Yeah this concept applies to every industry but I think technology has a good skew on marketing especially.

I bet both Intel and AMD could mass produce processors 30% faster right now with acceptable profit margins but instead they slowly real out something 100mhz faster every month. I bet apple had the iphone stocked up plenty months before the release.

If you are a Cingular member do you have to renew and get a 2 year agreement to use the iphone? Or can you just buy one up right and use the sim card i have right now with my current plan?

chris_venturini
11-13-2007, 09:26 AM
it will renew your plan and it has a new sim card in it. you can keep your current voice plan but you have to add a data plan, its pretty cheap though 20$ gives you unlimited data, visual voice mail, wifi, youtube, email (up to 9 email addresses, and 200 text messages, 1500 text is 30 and unlimited text is 40.

I think if you get an i-phone you can unlock it and use the same sim card from the original phone. My friend did that with his T-Mobile sim card and it WORKS!
