This is pretty cool. Would a computer like this even work for gaming?

I'd love to be able to work with a lot of data quickly, like installing programs, and running a lot of programs at once.

Wonder if this is more powerful than just using a dual cpu clovertown setup (8 processors)? You can buy those readily right now, and you don't have the slowdown from the gigabit switch he is using.

I'd love to be able to work with a lot of data quickly, like installing programs, and running a lot of programs at once.

Install Linux and learn how to use it... it's different from Windows and can be pretty confusing at first, but it's well worth the effort, and knowing Unix is a useful skill that not a lot of people have. It's amazing what a modern computer can do when it isn't loaded down with Windows bloatware. There once was a time when a 500 MHz Windows computer was more than enough to browse the Internet, e-mail, use Word & Excel, watch DVD's etc. Nowadays people seem to need 2+ GHz and 512+ MB of RAM to do the same thing, just because Windows and it's applications have "evolved" into inefficient messes of code... slowing everything down because the programmers were lazy/sloppy or they wanted to include some dumbass feature that 0.3% of people actually care about. The more powerful computers get, the more wasteful software developers are. Linux and other software aren't immune to that, but being open source really helps keep it in check.

I've had a 266MHz Linux machine running my network's internet connection, firewall, DHCP, DNS, file sharing, caching HTTP proxy, etc. for years and it still had plenty of CPU time left to spare... enough that I could also use it to compile code and process batches of pictures (resize, recompress, make thumbnails, etc). It's software never required any maintenance, it has run for well over a year a time without rebooting (and then it was only because of a power outage), and hardly used any power or put out much heat. Just the other day, I finally swapped it out for a 600MHz machine because I had a spare one and wanted something to help record and process video.

I've certainly thought about learning to use linux.

I've certainly thought about learning to use linux.

It used to be pretty miserable even doing an installation but there are a lot of distros out there w/ fantastic GUI installers that make it just as easy (almost easier) than doing a basic WinXP installation.

My favorite is Ubuntu but look around for others.

I like Mandriva as an easy desktop distro, but it doesn't cut it as a server anymore... the old Mandrake releases used to be usable for both.

I haven't tried the regular Ubuntu yet, but I just installed Ubuntu-server and it's nice... it's a pretty basic / small Debian installation, then you just apt-get everything else that you want. It's really easy to do and so much better than RPM hell, especially on the distros that have custom RPMs for everything and anything. The conf files and init scripts are a little different than the RedHat distros I've used before, but they seem cleaner and better organized.

I'll have to give Ubuntu desktop a try some time...

For anyone scared of linux because it's a hardcore ubergeekery required OS, it's absolutely not anymore.

It's so streamlined and as mentioned before ubuntu is a very easy to use "distro", or package. You'll hear the term "distro" as well as a bunch of different names like Ubuntu, Knoppix, Redhat, etc, basically they're just different configurations and features of the same linux core. Ubuntu is a very well rounded distro with probably everything you'll need day to day from firefox to openoffice (linux version of MS office).

That, and it's 100% free, so get a secondary partition set up (i'll walk ya through if you're interested) and you can dual boot, so when you start up you can select windows or linux. if you decide linux isn't your thing, then you can just delete the linux partition, and it costs you absolutely nothing at all.

EDIT:
BTW, if you like flashy cool user interfaces, or think vista's aero glass effects are cool, Beryl (once again, completely free application) blows any other user interface out of the water. I think i'd die if i didn't have my "cube", except mine is programmed to have 6 sides =) check out the video for what i'm talking about

Weston's words FTW. And since you can get a LOT of different distros off the net for zero cost, why not give it a try? Dual boot your current box just to try it.

The first time I installed Beryl I was amazed.... Beryl is awesome.

For a web server I haven't found anything better than CentOS. It's very fast, and easy to use. Thanks to YUM, it's also easy to update, and or add modules to. I've never used a gui with it so my experience is strictly from an admin point of view. I've got four dual core dual processor opterons running it right now.

Which version of linux should I try?

I've got vista ultimate loaded now

I'm totally impressed with the Beryl video.

I've got a quick question though. Every 'task' I give my computer to do, it always spikes up to at least 50% of my cpu usage. So as you can imagine, anytime I happen to try and do two things at once, it totally handicaps my system.

My video card and mother board recently crashed. I ended up getting a new video card, mother board, and power source. I ended up getting literally, the shittiest mother board at the store.

I never had this problem before. From the way I understand computers, the performance shouldn't be effected that much, since I have the same processor. Any input on this? I'd like to fix this before I try installing Linux; as it is a pain in the ass just to add songs to Windows Media Player, let alone install programs.

can you list the specs of your system perchance? processor/operating system/motherboard make and model/how much ram?

The motherboard is a vital part of your system and cheaper/older/inferior boards can effect performance, but usually won't cause that intense of a performance change. Though with some older processor/motherboard combinations it's possible to cut performance by downgrading to a board with a slower FSB or Front Side Bus.

Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80 GHz
1.87GHz
1.00 GB Ram

I honestly can't tell you which motherboard I have. It's an ATI and it was the only one compatible with my system that Microcenter had in stock. It was literally $40.

Oh, looks like this might be the motherboard: Silicon Image SiI 3512 SATARaid Controller.

Video card is a Radeon X1300 Series

Anything else? I'd actually like to just get a better mother board, but it seems like the stuff I'm using is out of date.

Download and run this program:

http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-140.zip

open the rar file in winrar and run the cpuz.exe file.

Once it's loaded, click the "about" tab, and at the bottom you should see "Registers Dump (.txt)" "HTML Dump (.html)" and "Validation".

Click on either registers dump or html dump and upload the file here. That'll give a complete log of all the hardware in your system, and once we know all that we can start making recommendations =)

ok, so that's the problem. You're running at 14x133.3, when you should be running 14x200. Basically, in non nerd terms, that means your computer should be running at 200mhz with a multiplier of 14 for a total of 2.8ghz, but instead its running at 133.3mhz with a multiplier of 14, giving you 1.866ghz.

What does that mean? Your computer is running at 2/3rds of the speed it should. Do me a favor and the logs you can get from cpu-z choose the HTML one, open the file and it will tell you the motherboard model number. Post that and I can tell ya if I can fix it through software or if it's a hardware problem :)

Which version of linux should I try?

I've got vista ultimate loaded now

Ubuntu is probably the best choice for a transitioning Windows user, imo. It's one of the few "does everything for you" linux distros that really works, well for the most part.

That's what I run (ubuntu) on my Mac in a virtual machine...on my work laptop I use gentoo linux and have been using that for about 4 years at work...~6yrs personal use (servers/desktops). That's my personal fav'...

Fedora 7 is also pretty nice for an rpm based distro.

Oh stu...something I use on my windows gaming computer is a little tool called CCleaner. Good tool to help keep your computer "clean" and running well.

The first time I installed Beryl I was amazed.... Beryl is awesome.

It's cool, wish it was stable...lot of the features are native Mac osx features.

wow I just replied to the same thread 3 times...

I'll have to do that when I get home. Real quick though, does that information tell you which model of video card I have? I'm having a redraw issue with my monitor, and I feels like the video card drivers aren't installed all of the sudden. I'm pretty sure I have the Radeon 9800X card, but I'm not certain.

I ran the bios and switched (what I thought was) the CPU speed to 3:4, which said it was 200 MHz, but when I restarted and ran all the stuff again, it still says 14 x 133.3 MHz.

Stu, that was the info i needed. There's no known problems with your motherboard and CPU combo.

As for the video card, the info you provided says the vendor ID is 0x1002, and the device IDs are 0x7142 and 0x7162. The vendor 0x1002 is ATI, and the device ids say you have an x1300

Finally, it looks like your processor is being throttled. This can either be due to heat (unlikely since it's showing slower speeds at the bios post bootup or by a feature known as speed step. Try going to power settings in your control panel and changing your power profile to "always on" and reboot. Then, re-run cpu-z and see if speeds are back to normal. I'll do some resesrch on your bios to see if there are any issues there ajd i'll let ya know.

I tried the "always on" power thing and it didn't work. I also tried changing it in the bios screen. It's on the setting where it automatically looks for the setting. I also tried turning the auto part off and running it that way. Nothing seems to work so far.

I installed the driver and got rid of my redraw issue. Now my computer keeps locking up for a few seconds, every 30 seconds or so. I'm going to just run McAffee again before I go to bed. I know I've had this problem before and I think it was just some shitty virus.

Hey look, I fixed my computer. Thanks to Street Kings, DrJones, and the internet for all the help. I'm going to see how it runs like this for a while, then I'm going to over clock it. :)
