My roommate just bought a '95 Del Sol. And it wants to put an alarm on it. I think he would like the keyless entry too, but his car doesn't have keyless entry right now. I think he'll have to add an relay or something for that to work. (Car does have power locks)

Any suggestions on a good alarm. I have a pretty cheap Viper alarm and am not too thrilled with it. If my windows are down but the car is locked; I can still unlock my car and open the door. Or I can close the trunk with the alarm activated and not set off the alarm. But it does get me 10% off my insurance.

Almost all of the alarms out there these days are made by DEI...I'd either go with a higher end alarm of theirs or an Alpine.

Personally, I have a python with all the bells and whistles...works pretty good and wasnt terribly expensive.

If he goes with DEI (viper, python, sidewinder, blah blah blah) he souldn't need relays. The 95 hondas use negative pulse doorlocks, you just tie into the factory relays.

If your alarm doesn't go off when you open your door, there is something wrong. As for as the trunk goes, chances are the impact sensor needs adjustment, or replaced.

I installed alarms for about 6 years, and always liked the dei stuff. It was straight forward, reliable, and easy to use, as long as it was installed correctly..... I still have the VIPER 800+ on my civic that I installed in 95. It has given me no trouble at all. I just resently bought a Sidewinder 550 w remote start for my wifes truck, didn't even really think about other brands.....

DEI and Alpine both have nice pagers you can use with either system. The Alpine pager is much better really, but you almost need the alpine alarm to get the most out of it. The DEI pager is kinda chunky...way big imho.

don't forget the hood lock... I was broke into 3 times in albuquerque, each time they tried to pop the hood to cut the siren. Put a pin switch on the hood, and a cable lock, and there is really no way they can get the hood open without making a lot of noise.......

Preludeshfan got my alarm and did the install for me. It's a python w/ all the bells and whisltes including a pager, proximety sensors, and blinking LED's in both the front of the car and the rear. He hooked me up REALLY good, but I cannot remember exactly how much, around $500 installed I believe.

How does that cable lock work? How much does it cost, or is it home made?

I have a Phython now but i am planning on upgrading to a 2 way system so i know when someone is fucking with my car. I also would know if a door is open, truck, window is down, etc.

I plan on having a battery backup with siren, shock, promixity, windows up and down, hood lock, basically everything.

Anyone want to buy mine when i take it out? I believe it's a phython 1500.

thanks for all the input. I'll pass in info along. Circuit City did my chitty installation. The siren is right next to the battery. I like the idea of the alarm system telling you if your windows are down. I'm always running outside if it starts raining to check.

I think several companies make hood locks. I've seen electronic ones (selaniod driven) and the cable type. The cable type is probably the most reliable. The elctronic ones are usually set up to lock when the alarm is armed, or only when the siren goes off. I was always worried about them latching shut.
The cable ones are basically just a cable (think bicycle brake cable, only way heavier) They use a solex lock (round funny key) to unlock the cable. When the lock is in, it pushes a pin on the car into a bracket on the hood, dead bolting it shut. When the lock is out, the pin is retracted. I'm pretty sure mine was made by DEI, but I think there are several out there. I'm thinking it was about $50, but its been 7 years, and I can't remember.......
