Canon will bring to market an 11-megapixel single-lens reflex digital still camera for high-end users in November, the company announced Tuesday. The EOS-1Ds uses a new CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) image sensor Canon developed, the company says in a statement. Until now, CMOS image sensors, which record photons of light and change them into electric signals, had a maximum size of 6.3 million pixels.

Cool stuff....check out the full article.

It'll still take them years to get the megapixel quality out of digital that they do out of regular film. And besides, you can still do a 24X48(or whatever) image with a 5 megapixel digital camera

 I can't even afford a 2megapixel... by the way, what ever happened to cheap old technology. It seems like entry level digi cameras never drop below about $180. I think I need a 1 MP camera $180... then 1.5 comes out $180.... now I see 2.5 MP for abou $180... so that means I should be able to pick up a 1.5 for cheap... where???

I shoot with a Kodak DCS 420 professional camera. Its only 1.5mpixel, but totally uncompressed and built on a nikon n90s body. With just 1.5mp I can print at 8x10 which is enough for me. An 11mpixel image would be a pain to edit in photoshop without some serious processor/memory/drive space.

Well the most cool thing about that camera is that the image sensor is the same size as a 35mm camera. So the focal length for all your equipment would stay the same. The current high res cameras need to use multiple CCDs to accomplish a high resolution..this camera is pretty far from that. Pricey tho...

Actually, thats why I've kept my dcs420, it has a 2.5x multiplier. So my f2.8 80-200 lens becomes an effective f2.8
208-520 A real lens with that size in an f2.8 would cost over $10k. I mainly use my setup for motorsports photography, where i need a fast big telephoto lens. This is so fast I almost always hand hold my shots of formula 1 cars from about 100yds out.

The pic is being compressed to death by the jpeg. the original looks10x better and much sharper with no pixelization. Its getting to be time to retire this camera back into a film camera and get a new digital SLR, but NOT an 11 mpixel one :)
